Humans are natural philosophizers who are constantly forming interpretations and expectations based upon their perceptions and prior experiences, including their familiarity with particular people and activities, and the social contexts within which these are situated. As human individuals, we all have an innate sense of philosophy in common. As individuals, the majority of us may be described as natural philosophers in that we are naturally philosophical about our lifeworld experiences and our need to interpret these as a basis for informing our understanding. This book introduces a novel theory which encompasses the Philosophy of Confidence-Informed Social Motivation (PCISM) and Philopsychlical Hermeneutics. The theory asserts that human individuals and groups function at optimum philosophical and psychological levels when their confidence, motivation, familiarity and expectation levels are at their peak. Confidence and motivation influence each other and work together as a dynamic combination of philosophical interpretations and psychological reactions which result in reciprocal interpretive feedback. Within the term philopsychlical, confidence, motivation, familiarity and expectation are presented as universal informants and influences upon human behaviour within all social contexts. PCISM is in the early stages of its evolution: however, the key tenets are discussed and presented here in such a way that they may be applied across all domains of human knowledge, behaviour and endeavour as a means of enhancing our further understanding of the universal economics of human behaviour.

There is now renewed and growing interest in post-Hegelian idealism, which was in its heyday at the end of the nineteenth century. This book is concerned with the religious and socio-ethical aspects in the writings of selected idealists. It addresses the question: was post-Hegelian philosophical idealism, in its friendliest guise, more a help than a hindrance to the expression of Christian convictions and the articulation of Christian doctrines? In pursuit of an answer, the author discusses the writings of seven British idealists who, if not in every case entirely doctrinally orthodox, were by no means unkindly disposed towards the Christian faith: T. H. Green, Edward Caird, J. R. Illingworth, Henry Jones, A. S. Pringle-Pattison, C. C. J. Webb, and A. E. Taylor. The book opens with an account of the formative intellectual influences upon the seven idealists and their consequent philosophical positions. There follow chapters on God, ethics and society, and Christian doctrine. The conclusion passes some positive and negative judgments upon post-Hegelian idealism in so far as it bears upon, or expresses, Christian belief. It also broaches the underlying question of the method of Christian thought vis ^ vis the general intellectual environment.

The Cultural Politics of Analytic Philosophy examines three generations of analytic philosophers, who between them founded the modern discipline of analytic philosophy in Britain. The book explores how philosophers such as Bertrand Russell, A.J. Ayer, Gilbert Ryle and Isaiah Berlin believed in a link between German aggression in the twentieth century and the nineteenth-century philosophy of Hegel and Nietzsche. Thomas L. Akehurst thus identifies in this political critique of continental philosophy the origins of the hugely significant faultline between analytic and continental thought, an aspect of twentieth-century philosophy that is still poorly understood. The book also uncovers a tripartite alliance in British analytic philosophy, between nation, political virtue and philosophical method.
