Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical Repertory, Vol. 4 Dr. Carswell and a few other writers, advocate the doctrine that tubercnlar matter may be absorbed without undergoing any change, 'that is, without softening, and its common sequence the formation of vomica. Vogel and other pathologists deny this in the most positive manner, and consider the tubercular process, from first to last, disorganizing and destructive in its nature and tendency. Perhaps in the present state of our knowl edge, it cannot be positively determined, yet there are some reasons derived from analogy and practical experience which would lead to the conclusion that such absorption is possible. There cannot be the least doubt that at first tubercular matter is always deposited in a semi-daid state, and there is no evidence to Show that it immediately becomes indurated or concrete; and if it should remain uid for even a limited time, it would but obey the ordinary laws of the animal economy to re-enter the circulation by absorption. And it is a legitimate inference that such actions may be carried on for a considerable time, and thus retard or prevent the accumulation of the morbid matter, capeei ally in those cases where the tubercular predisposition is not very great, or, if favorable in uences are brought to act on the patient, there is every reason to believe that the tubercular exu dation, like the in ammatory, may be absorbed, and the parts regain their usual health. Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical Advance, Vol. 5: May, 1877 March, 1878 Staying the second night only witnessed little progress in labor. Left my patient again to attend to my professional duties. I had made frequent examinations which left no room for doubt in my mind that it was a breech presentation. As my patient did not show any symptoms otherwise than natural labor, I concluded to let nature take her course, and fight it out on that line ifit took all summer. Nevertheless I found that the loss of sleep during the two previous nights and attending to a very large number of patients during the day was telling my strength. Excerpt from Cincinnati Medical News, Vol. 4 I have been invited to address you this evening on the usefulness of the microscope in pharmacy and the drug trade. As so vast a subject cannot be treated in a single lecture, to any satisfactory extent, I have concluded to confine myself to the most important application of the microscope in our profession, viz., to its use in the examination of crude drugs, and to illustrate this less by a lecture than by the exhibition of specimens ofa number of microscopical preparations. Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical News, Vol. 9: September, 1880 It is hardly worth While to discuss here Whether recur rence is more often observed where one or the other method may have been followed; for since the question can not concern any specific process beyond the mere matter of complete removal, it is needless to say that definite conclusions have not been reached. The present article, then, is not intended to laud the action of caustics as superior or equal to that of the scalpel under all circumstances in these diseases, but only to indicate, in a measure, the conditions under which they should be employed in preference to all other means, or as accessory to these, the selection of the particular caustic for the given purpose, and, in a word, to assist in rescuing from the hands of ignorant quacks and pre tenders such precious remedies; for it can not be denied that in this country, at least, they have been abandoned to a large extent to such persons, whose ignorant and in discriminate uses of them have tended to bring them into further disrepute.
