Excerpt from Centennial Oration the Voices of the Past Tonight we come, at our mother's call, to celebrate her centennial jubilee. Not a single absent member! For, whether in the flesh or in the spirit, all have come, and to the roll-call of this gala hour answer here. Hoist to the top Old Glory's rippling colors! Bring forth the timbre] and the harp, and let the anthems swell to heaven from all the daughters of song. But, to warm our hearts, we need no other wine than Memory's. Horace may prefer the old Falernian from the Italian hills. But we'll drink to our mother's health in the rarer vintage of her own purple clusters. Excerpt from A Centennial Edition of the Semi-Centennial Oration on American Independence We have called this oration the semi-centennial, because it is unique. Among the hundreds of towns which on the 4th of July, 1826, celebrated the close of the half century of American Independence, it was reserved for Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, to produce an oration which has survived the second half century, and become a household word in thousands of families in all parts of the Union. It was delivered by peter P. Lowe, esq., and was published by request. In Ohio it is still quoted, as frequently as either Shakespeare or the Bible. It is as quota ble as Poor Richard's Almanac. Reader, if it be new to you, do not lay it aside hastily. Reserve it for a leisure hour, refresh yourself with a careful perusal, and you afterwards, on many and various occasions, shall find its rich expressions recurring to your memory, like a cheerful companion, helping you to keep the merry heart that doeth good like a medicine. Excerpt from Centennial Oration: Delivered Before the Citizens of Woodstock, Vt;, And Vicinity, on the Fourth of July, 1876 Almost simultaneously with the erection of the Altar, where they could pour forth their hearts to the Deity, whom they venerated and loved, they erected the school house where their children could receive instruction, such as should fit them to become good citizens, and qualify them for the responsible duties of administering in due time the political affairs of the state. Excerpt from Centennial Oration, Delivered at Portland, July 6, 1886 Whoever stands, on a clear summer day, on the verandah at Cushing's Island and looks across the harbor, will find his eye resting upon a scene which for loveliness and varied beauty has no superior, and perhaps no parallel anywhere on the broad earth. The long slope of grassy verdure varied by the darker foliage of the trees spreads wide to the water's edge. Then begins the bright sparkle of the summer sea, that many twinkling smile of ocean, that countless laughter of the waves which has lighted up the heart of man centuries since Eschylus died, and centuries before he lived. Across the sunlit waters, dotted with the white sails or seamed with the bubbling foam of the steamer's track, past the wharves, bristling with masts and noisy with commerce, the gaze falls upon the houses sloping gently upward in the centre and becoming more and more embowered in trees as they climb the hills at either end. Following the tall spires the eye loses itself in the bright blue sky above. On the right are the roadsteads and the islands stretching out of sight. On the left are Fore River, the forests, the Cape and the boundless ocean, and altogether a scene which mingles all that is best and bright of sea and shore. If you shut your eyes and let the lofty spires disappear, the happy homes glisten out of sight, and the wharves give place to a curving line of shelving, pebbly beach; if you imagine the bright water unvexed by traffic, the tall peninsula covered with forests and bushy swamps, with the same varied expanse of island and of sea, and the whole scene undisturbed by any sound save the clanging cries of innumerable birds and water fowl, you will be looking upon Machigonne as it appeared to George Cleeve in the year 1632, when he landed, not knowing what a beautiful city he was to found, and never dreaming that at this distant day his name would be honored by so many people on the very scene of his varied struggles, his alternate victories and defeats. Excerpt from 1776-1876, Centennial Fourth of July Oration: Delivered at Chester, Penna As time rolled on, a still wider spirit of public improvement followed, and canals and railroads were projected over vast sections of our country, connecting large cities and rich agricultural and manufacturing districts with one another and with the seaport towns.
