Excerpt from The Buffalo, 1923 He was an elder and one of the trustees of the First Christian Church of Johnson City, and had alv'vays been actively engaged in the work of the Sunday School. For many years he was trustee and treasurer of Milligan College, which has enlarged and grown until today it is one of the best equipped institutions in this section and its success stands as a monument to his memory. His devotion to the college knew no limitations; his money gifts, 110 bounds, except that of his bank deposits. Even then his credit, always good, was placed at the disposal of.the college. _at his death his name safe-guarded in notes which have since been paid by donors, and the notes burned. He attended every college function; assumed a vital interest in each student; cheered and aided the discouraged and was greatly beloved by all. During the dark and uncertain days and since, he kept the lines of communication open between Milligan College and God. School opened early in Sep tember, and both of these good souls entered with enthusiasm into the work. During the first quarter they found it necessary to live nearer to the school; hence, they leased a small two-room. Cottage and one acre of ground adjoining the school lot. Later this was bought from S. W. Hyder for for a private home. Its im mediate dooryard is now occupied by the large locust tree in front of Hardin Hall. Excerpt from The Buffalo, 1915: Milligan The site of Milligan College, with its superb view of the majestic Buffalo Mountain and the silver waters of the Buffalo Creek owing: just below, was early chosen as an ideal spot for an institution of learning. Before the Civil War, a school was established, and after the war between the States. This school was given the name of Buffalo Institute. In 1880 a young man from Kentucky by the name of Josephus Hop wood came to Carter County iii search of a place to found an institution of learning built upon the broad foundation of Christian culture a clean heart and a clean life. Buffalo Institute was turned over to him. And in 1882 the old name was changed to Milligan College. For twenty-three years, from 1880 to 1903, President Hopwood directed the destinies of Milligan College. In 1903 President Hopwood relinquished the burden he had borne so long to one who had graduated under him and who was associated with him for years as a teacher - Henry R. Garrett.
