When Benjamin Franklin adopted John Bartram's 1739 idea of bringing together the "virtuosi" of the colonies to promote inquiries into "natural secrets, arts and syances," the result was, in 1743, the founding of the American Philosophical Society. Bell records the early years of the Society through sketches of its first members, those elected between 1743 and 1769. This volume includes biographies of some of the Society's best known members such as Franklin, David Rittenhouse, John Bartram, Benjamin Rush, John Dickinson, Thomas Hopkinson and many lesser known merchants, artisans, farmers, physicians, lawyers and clergymen with familiar surnames such as Biddle, Colden, and Morris. This early works is a fascinating insight into the life of John McCarter as compiled by his grandchild. No attempt has been made to prepare an extended biography of John McCarter as few materials now remain from which a biographical sketch can be prepared. All that has been attempted has been to collect and preserve such an account of his life as can be gleaned from original documents now in existence and as will interest his descendants, with some examples of his literary efforts, and brief notices, mostly obituary, of some of his children and grandchildren. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
