Excerpt from Bishop Pendle: Or, the Bishop's Secret For the rest she had really beautiful eyes, a somewhat elastic mouth, and a straight nose well powdered to gloss over its chronic redness. Her teeth were genuine and she cultivated what society novelists term silvery peals of laughter. In every way she accentuated or obliterated nature in her efforts to render herself attractive. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from The Life of Bishop Jewel At the end of the Life, will be found as copious an account of Jewel's voluminous controversy with Harding, as appeared to be compatible with the de sign and limits of this publication. It is hoped that the Notice of that most memorable con ict may not be wholly uninteresting or unprofitable. Jewel is principally known and honoured, at the present day, as the author of the immortal Apology for the Church of England. But full justice cannot be done to his memory, without some knowledge of the extent and value of his other gigantic labours. Excerpt from Benediction and the Bishops This book has been rapidly written, after some consultation with others who share the attitude of its author towards the subject, and from materials gradually accumulated during several years of study, with a sense of urgency. The Catholic clergy in the Church of England are face to face with a claim increasingly put forward by their bishops, whom they desire to obey in all things lawful, to forbid Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. The fact that not a few priests have felt it right to admit this claim and to surrender, sorrowfully and under protest, practices which they had adopted for the honour of our Lord and the good of souls, makes it the more important for those who cannot in reason and conscience con sent to such surrender to state clearly and unequivocally the grounds on which they base their refusal. Excerpt from The Secret Bequest Paulists in New York, lending a shadowy remote ness to the lofty roof and pillared aisles, while bringing out with exquisite effect the radiance Of the ever burning light within the sanctuary, which brightened in steadfast glow as the Obscurity deepened.
