Excerpt from The Bachelor of Salamanca, Vol. 2 of 2 We enjoyed a felicity the most perfect, and I, in particular, was satisfied with my lot: in Donna Paula's arms, I found a source of the most pure and inexpressible pleasures, and though married, I loved her more than ever. Excerpt from A Bachelor's Blunder, Vol. 2 of 3 French chateau, with steep roofs, jutting wings, and high windows, which at a later period were fitted with plate glass. The edifice has been a good deal criticised, but no one has ever thought of disputing the beauty of its position. It stands on an eminence, approached from the north by a long, straight avenue, while on the south (towards which quarter the windows of the principal reception rooms look) is a broad terrace, terminated by a stone balustrade, some ten feet beneath which are level lawns and geometrically designed flower-beds, according well enough with the formal character of the building. In addition to the wonted remunerative visi tors, there were several French officers, and all the visitable English at Dieppe; all those large, unhappy families (unhappy at least in prospects. Excerpt from His Grace, Vol. 2 of 2 We all went early to bed; for, although Mr Gascoigne's cigars were excellent, his personal attractions were scarcely strong enough to detain two weary men in the smoking-room for more than half-an-hour, and Hurstbourne was too sleepy to go on sparring with him. As for me, I was tired rather than heavy-headed, sleep having been murdered, in my case, by the distressing reflections with which that old woman had provided me, and which indeed kept me tossing to and fro half the night through. Excerpt from Lucille Belmont, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel He. Evidently endeavoured to enliven me as much as possible, and to arouse whatever latent ambition there might still be lurking in me after this long period of mental dissi pation; he talked a great deal about my prospects at Florence, his confidence in my exertions, and mixed up these graver sub jects with the lighter and more amusing topics of the day; it was more like a friend conversing with one of his own age and sympathies, than a father giving advice to his son; and this was the footing on which I had been so anxious to place my relations with him.
