The painter, designer, and architect Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) played a crucial role in expanding modernist aesthetics beyond Paris and beyond painting. Opposing growing nationalism around 1900, he sought to make painting the basis of an aesthetic that transcended boundaries between the arts and between nations through his work in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Van de Velde’s designs for homes, museums, and theaters received international recognition. The artist, often associated with the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, developed a style of abstraction that he taught in his School of Applied Arts in Weimar, the immediate precursor of and model for the Bauhaus. As a leading member of the German Werkbund, he helped shaped the fields of modern architecture and design. Although the work of father and son Van de Velde received considerable attention from historians and art historians, no comprehensive monograph on the Van de Velde studio has so far been written. In this book Remmelt Daalder describes their careers as a case study of a 17th -century family firm specialising in maritime art. Instead of focusing on their artistic development per se, Daalder explores how they developed their products to keep apace with the art market in the 17th century. Around 1600, trade and shipping flourished in the Northern Netherlands as never before. This activity of ships on the water and in the many ports was a new, inexhaustible source of inspiration for painters who chose the sea as their subject. Among these marine painters were father and son Willem van de Velde. They worked closely together for over fifty years, first from their Amsterdam shop and from 1672 at the court of the English kings Charles II and James II. With their eye for detail and entrepreneurial talent, they became the most prominent marine painters of the seventeenth century.0Their studio has existed for over fifty years. Their productivity in that period was unprecedented, they made an estimated 2500 drawings and 800 paintings. Their works of art can now be found in the collections of all major museums in the world. Fanni Fetzer, Director, Kunstmuseum Luzern Rinus Van de Velde has made remarkable strides in recent years in the development of his oeuvre. Best known for his large-scale charcoal drawings at the start of his career, he now positions himself as a total artist, using a range of different media and forms of expression such as drawing, sculpture, installations and film. Initially, Van de Velde used found photographs and images as a basis for his drawings, but he later went in search of ways of exercising more control over the images. He achieved this through an extensive process of scene-building, in which he cast himself and those around him in different roles and characters in order to fit them into the narrative discourse of his fictional autobiography. These scenes were built up life-size, with even the tiniest detail being reproduced in wood and cardboard. This book focuses on this part of his artistic activity and has been produced to mark the eponymous solo show in Kunstmuseum Luzern in Switzerland. The Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, holds the most extensive collection of Dutch master drawings in Sweden. It comprises important works by Rembrandt and his pupils, as well as drawings by Abraham Bloemart, Jan van Goyen, Herman Saftleven, Willem van de Velde and many other artists. Although trade contacts between the Netherlands and Sweden were lively in the seventeenth century, they account for only a small part of the collection. The bulk of the drawings was acquired by Swedish collectors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Foremost among them was Count Carl Gustaf Tessin, whose acquisitions at the 1741 Paris sale of the financier Pierre Crozat make up the core of the collection.This catalogue, the result of a long-term research project, includes almost 600 drawings, of which approximately 130 are previously unpublished. Besides the Nationalmuseum, it draws on the collections of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, The Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Uppsala University Library and other institutions.
