In this beautifully illustrated and mostly wordless book, Cameron isn't small, but he's not exactly big. He's not slow, but he's also not quick. He wants friends, but it never quite seems to work out. And in a game of tag, he's going to end up "it." Or at least that's how things are on this side of the Bramble. On the other side, it's a different story. On the other side of the Bramble, something extraordinary can happen, something that changes everything.
Jack lives in the shadow of his successful and famous Egyptologist father, who has digs worldwide, but Jack knows not all of his discoveries have found their way to the museum. Growing up, he was told that dealing with Middle Eastern history can lead to danger. Unfortunately for Jack, he learns just how true that is when he is coaxed into finishing a dig that his father started. A dig his father never finished because he mysteriously disappeared in the midst of strange events. Jack and his best friend, Marty, are then running for their lives being pursued by things that should not even exist. Everything he thought about Egyptian history is about to be turned upside down and the entire Western World is now in danger of an ancient biological weapon.

“Combining the best of mythology and real history, Tim Powers takes you on a rollicking magical adventure that is both tense and hilarious. You won’t read a more plausible explanation for Western civilization, or one that’s half so much fun.”—David Brin Brian Duffy, aging soldier of fortune, had been hired in Venice by a strange old man who called himself Aurelianus Ambrosius. He was supposed to go to Vienna and act as bouncer at an inn where the fabulous Herzwesten beer was brewed. That was clear enough. But why was he guided and guarded on the trip by creatures from the ancient legends? Why should he be attacked by ifrits and saved by mythical dwarfs? What was so important about the Herzwesten beer to the Fisher King—whoever he was? Why was Duffy plagued by visions of a sword and an arm rising from a lake? And what had a bunch of drunken, ancient Vikings to do with it all? Then there was no time for speculation as Vienna was besieged by the Turkish armies of Suleiman. Duffy found himself drawn into a war of desperation and magic. It was up to him to preserve the West until the drawing of the Dark.

This is a story of a young scholar, born in Wales, who takes a ride on a train from Paris headed for the Balkans to study under his mentor Professor Aristophanes, a professor of paranormal psychology in Cairo. Given an assignment of reading the professor's seminal work: "Paranormal Psychology. Being a Treatise on Evolution of the Arcane and Mystical Rites of Kalliste (Thera/Santorin) Society of the Ancients" and "The Egyptian Book of the Dead," Nathan becomes mesmerized and has a difficult time accommodating the vagaries of a train trip and the intellectual and emotional stimulation of the books and some of the people on the train. Time and space become meaningless or of extraordinary importance depending on the state of his thought.
