Excerpt from The American Journal of Roentgenology (Founded in 1906 as the American Quarterly of Roentgenology), Vol. 8: 1921, January to December American roentgen ray society: I wish first to thank you for the great honor you have done me in asking me to give the first'caldwell Lecture. It is a pleasure to join with you in. Remembering the name of one of the martyrs of medicine - a man who gave his life for the advancement of science. He was a pioneer, an inventor, a research worker, a versatile, enthusiastic and lovable man; and we are all losers by his death. We shall honor him best by carrying on the work which he loved so much, and which meant everything in life to him. I believe we shall carry it on most rapidly when we do as he did, when we venture out into pure science - int0 physics, chemistry and engineering, to improve our apparatus; and into biology, physiology'and bio-chemistry to explain our findings in the body. How much more rap idly our transformers and tubes would have been improved if there had been more men like Caldwell at work in the field; and how glad we should be to-day that some manu facturers have at last seen the incalculable benefits that can come through proper co operation with a physicist like Dr. Coolidge!
