For a couple of days there was confusion; banks hurriedly dispatching messengers from one to the other to find out what had become of the currency. Finally it was discovered that Henry H. Smith had drawn five million dollars from the banks, in cash, and locked it up in his safe. This simple action was enough to disarrange the business of the whole community.
