The "All Night Vigil" held in parish churches on a Saturday evening, is one of the best-known features of the Russian Orthodox Church. This English translation is intended both to help the worshipper to follow the service at the Vigil for Sunday held on Saturday night and to assist the choir in chanting the service. It contains the unvarying texts and rubrics regarding the insertion of the variable parts. The parts of the priest, deacon, reader and choir are clearly indicated.
The "All Night Vigil" composed by Robert Sirico is an original English language musical setting of the fixed parts of Vespers and Matins written for mixed SATB choir as used in any Orthodox Church jurisdiction where the Vigil is sung in English. This book provides the choir director and singers with a large 8.5 x 11 inch, easy to read score with each voice part on its own staff. All sections are clearly marked, and most movements could easily stand alone as substitute hymns or even concert selections. The 'All Night Vigil' succeeds the 'Simple Divine Liturgy', and many other original sacred music compositions by Robert Sirico and is available on the official YouTube Channel of the 'Orthodox Christian Music Project' easily found by searching "OCMP33".
This pocket-size hieratikon contains all the texts necessary for a deacon or priest in serving the daily hours of the Orthodox Church - Vespers, Compline, Midnight Office, Matins and the hours. Church Slavonic and English texts are provided in parallel, on facing pages. Also included are instructions and additional prayers for the All-Night Vigil and the services of Great Lent, the festal and Sunday prokeimena, and festal megolynaria. The cloth binding is sewn for durability with a stamped cover. This second edition has been updated with corrections from errata to the first edition and thoroughly revised to conform to the style of the other bilingual service books in this series. It also includes selected texts from the Menologion previously omitted, whilst certain supplementary materials have been excluded as not being needed by the priest or deacon for the performance of these services. Finally, this edition includes more marking ribbons to facilitate the preparation of text from multiple sections throughout a single service.
In a convenient pocket size this book contains all the clergy parts for the services of Vespers, the Midnight Office, Matins and the All Night Vigil, following the order of the corresponding service book in Church Slavonic. Additionally a brief Typicon (i.e. Rubrical guide) is provided and other ancillary materials that vary according to the time of the year. A list of the saints remembered on each day is also included.
