Achilles Family History
Henry Ludwig Achilles was born ca. 1746 in the former Duchy of Brunswick in central Germany. He married Dorothea Elizabeth Stuetzer in 1770 at Wolfenbuettel, Brunswick. Shortly after their third child was born in 1775, Henry, a member of the Brunswick Ducal armed forces, was sent to America to fight in the Revolutionary War for England. He was captured by American forces in 1777. He later served in the American Army. He married 2) Mary Page Collins, in Dunbarton, New Hampshire, in 1778. They four children. He married 3) Martha Hadlock in 1823. He died in 1834 at New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Descendants of his American family lived in New Hampshire, New York, Quebec, Vermont, and elsewhere.

Heinrich Ludewig Achilles (1737/40-1834) was born in Germany. He married Dorothea Elisabeth Stützer (1742-1798), a daughter of Samuel Buchhart Stützer and Anna Catherina Koch, in 1770. They had three children. He went to America in 1776 as a mercenary and was captured in battle. In 1778, he married a widow, Mary Page Collins, who had six children. They had four more children. He may have been naturalized in 1790 or 1795, and took the name Henry Louis Achilles. Descendants live throughout the northern United States and Canada. Other Achilles families in the U.S. and Canada are also noted.
