Excerpt from The Abbey of Paisley, From Its Foundation Till Its Dissolution: With Notices of the Subsequent History of the Church, and an Appendix of Illustrative Documents This work has been composed amid the many distractions and cares of a large parish, but the writer will be amply rewarded if the publica tion of this book, by shewing how closely the Abbey is associated with the history of Scotland, promotes in any way the restoration of the building. He wishes he could venture to hope that it might lead those to whom the care of the Abbey has been committed, to take a personal interest in it, as a most sacred trust. Originally published in 1878. The importance of the Abbey in the history of Scotland is established through a review of monastic history, the foundation of the Priory which became the Abbey, the early kings of Scotland, the accession of the Stewarts and associated royal patronage, and the later Abbots. After the Dissolution, Paisley's role in subsequent Scottish Church history includes consideration of the Covenant and of Witchcraft.
