Have you ever meant to finish a quilt, but don't because your kids and grandkids are coming for a visit this weekend, or your neighbor needs you to dog sit, or your husband wants to fix the bathroom sink but you had better watch him do it so that he doesn't also take apart the toilet and the shower? Yeah, me, too. Since life gets in the way of quilting from time to time, I ran a challenge for one week to get myself, and some quilting friends back on track. Want to join me? Read the introduction section the night before you are ready to take the challenge and do the extra credit. Then, every morning, read the essay for the day, and then, GET SEWING! Broken down by the month, fifty-three artists from seven states share 72 original wall-hangings that were made to celebrate some of the lesser-known "holidays" throughout the year: World Braille Day, National Tooth Fairy Day, National Crayon Day, Reach as High as You Can Day, Paper Clip Day, Hug Your Cat Day, National Hot Dog Day, Middle Child's Day, National Coffee Day, It's My Party Day, Button Day, and Bathtub Party Day. Learn where the ideas came from and what techniques were used to make these amazing, inspirational quilts. Weaving a National Map draws on contributions to a September 2002 workshop and the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) "vision" document for The National Map, envisioned by the USGS as a database providing "public domain core geographic data about the United States and its territories that other agencies can extend, enhance, and reference as they concentrate on maintaining other data that are unique to their needs." The demand for up-to-date information in real time for public welfare and safety informs this need to update an aging paper map series that is, on average, 23 years old. The NRC report describes how The National Map initiative would gain from improved definition so that the unprecedented number of partners needed for success will become energized to participate. The challenges faced by USGS in implementing The National Map are more organizational than technical. To succeed, the USGS will need to continue to learn from challenges encountered in its ongoing pilot studies as well as from other federal-led programs that have partnered with multiple sectors.
