This volume contains the papers that were accepted for presentation at the International Conference on T X, XML, and Digital Typography, jointly held with E the 25th Annual Meeting of the T X Users Group in Xanthi, Greece in the sum- E mer of 2004. The term "Digital Typography" refers to the preparation of printed matter using only electronic computers and electronic printing devices, such as laser-jet printers. The document preparation process involves mainly the use of a digital typesetting system as well as data representation technologies. TXand E its offspring are beyond doubt the most successful current digital typesetters, while XML is the standard for text-based data representation for both business and scientific activities. All papers appearing in this volume were fully refereed by the members of the program committee. The papers were carefully selected to reflect the research work that is being done in the field of digital typography using T X and/or its E o?spring. The problems for which comprehensive solutions have been proposed include proper multilingual document preparation and XML document processing and generation. The proposed solutions deal not simply with typesetting issues, but also related issues in document preparation, such as the manipulation of complex bibliographic databases, and automatic conversion of text expressed in one grammatical system to a more recent one (as for the Greek language, converting between monotonic Greek and polytonic Greek). This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on TEX, XML, and Digital Typography, held jointly with the 25th Annual Meeting of the TEX User Group, TUG 2004 in Xanthi, Greece in August/September 2004. The 21 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers reflect the state of the art of digital typography using TEX or its offsprings. Besides typesetting issues, the papers deal with topics like multilingual document preparation, XML document processing and generation, complex bibliographic databases, and automatic conversion.
Using clear and concise language this book introduces new users to the use of the TeX system, in particular document preparation using LaTeX. It avoids the pitfalls of having to search through several advanced books on the subject, by collecting together the more frequently required tools and presenting these in a single accessible volume. It also describes the recent developments in multilingual typesetting using TeX that now make it straightforward for users to prepare documents in their own language and alphabet, giving the book a global readership. The International Conference on Mathematical Knowledge Management has now reached its third edition, creating and establishing an original and stimulating scientific community transversal to many different fields and research topics. The broad goal of MKM is the exploration of innovative, semantically enriched, digital encodings of mathematical information, and the study of new services and tools exploiting the machine-understandable nature of the information. MKM is naturally located in the border area between digital libraries and the mec- nization of mathematics, devoting a particular interest to the new developments in information technology, and fostering their application to the realm of ma- ematical information. The conference is meant to be a forum for presenting, discussing and comparing new tools and systems, standardization e?orts, critical surveys, large experiments,and case studies. At present, we are still getting to know each other, to understand the work done by other people, and the potentialities offered by their work to our own research activity. Dendrimers are hyperbranched molecules with well-defined nanometer-scale dimensions. Important technological applications of these systems, both in biomedicine and materials science, have been recently proposed. Liquid crystal dendrimers are fascinating materials that combine the characteristics of dendrimers with the anisotropic physical behaviour and molecular self-organization typical of liquid crystals. This unique association of physical and chemical properties, together with the possibility of multi-selective functionalization put forward by dendrimers, opens new perspectives for applications. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful experimental technique applied in materials science and an important tool to the study of molecular organization and dynamics. The last two decades have witnessed a revolution in the realm of typography, with the virtual disappearance of hot-lead typesetting in favor of the so-called digital typesetting. The principle behind the new technology is simple: imagine a very fine mesh superimposed on a sheet of paper. Digital typesetting consists in darkening the appropriate pixels (tiny squares) of this mesh, in patterns corresponding to each character and symbol of the text being set. The actual darkening is done by some printing device, say a laser printer or phototypesetter, which must be told exactly where the ink should go. Since the mesh is very fine-the dashes surrounding this sentence are some six pixels thick, and more than 200 pixels long-the printer can only be controlled by a computer program, which takes a "high-level" description of the page in terms of text, fonts, and formatting commands, and digests all of that into "low-level" commands for the printer. TEX is such a program, created by Donald E. Knuth, a computer scientist at Stanford University.
