Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el régimen nacional-socialista perpetró un extenso expolio de obras de arte en los territorios ocupados, principalmente en Polonia, Austria y Francia. Esta campaña de saqueo tuvo como objetivo enriquecer las colecciones de arte del Tercer Reich, afines a su ideología y promover la propaganda del régimen, a través de la destrucción de las obras contrarias. El expolio se realizó mediante una clasificación de arte ario o degenerado; además, la producción de este proyecto ha sido enfocada mediante una selección subjetiva de obras pictóricas. El trasiego de obras de arte en el mercado internacional se estableció mediante una red de tráfico ilegal de arte, vendiendo obras robadas en el mercado negro con fines lucrativos o, en las postrimerías del nazismo, intercambiándolas por bienes estratégicos para financiar los grandes gastos de la guerra, donde no se hicieron distinciones de tipos de arte. Este robo cultural tuvo un alcance económico sin precedentes. Después de la guerra, se iniciaron esfuerzos para recuperar y devolver las obras de arte saqueadas a sus legítimos propietarios, aunque muchas obras se encuentran en paradero desconocido o actualmente son el objeto de litigios desencadenantes de grandes tensiones internacionales.
