The widespread diffusion of digital, connected objects such as smartphones or tablets as well as the increasing integration of computing and connectivity capabilities into everyday artifacts like TVs and cars have significantly changed individual behavior in recent decades: it has become the norm to interact with technology and to be connected with online resources regardless of time and place. Social interactions have increasingly become intertwined with technology, making it almost impossible to fully participate in everyday life activities without IT. As a final example, with the integration of network connectivity, digital technologies, products, and services are not used in isolation anymore, but working together as assemblages, thereby expanding the range of what they and their users can do. Overall, we have witnessed that IT has become deeply socially embedded in everyday life and routines. Understanding individual behavior has a long tradition in information systems research. However, given the fundamental changes in recent years related to technology use, it is questionable whether traditional models and theories are still applicable in the digital age. The goal of this dissertation is to address respective shortcomings. As a first step, a comprehensive review of the literature on digital transformation is performed for a better understanding of this phenomenon surrounding the changes we have witnessed regarding individual behavior. Afterwards, new concepts to explain and measure individual behavior and expectations related to connected objects are developed and examined. Furthermore, as the topic of connected objects is closely connected to the concept of personalization, a design study is performed that 1) provides an artifact to handle the efficiency-personalization trade-off in the provision of firm offerings and 2) illustrates how personalization influences the user perceptions of respective products and services. Based on the findings, a framework for the study of connected objects is synthesized and presented. Overall, the findings of this dissertation have relevant implications for research and practice in the fields of technology acceptance, digital life, and digital transformation.
In the context of the (digital) transformation of economy and society, the technology acceptance of the population is increasingly influenced by a perceived loss of control through new technologies. Loss of control is defined in this volume as a multi-causal, multi-modal and cyclical process of transition of control and conceptually brought together in a multi-dimensional heuristic model. The results of a first quantitative-empirical analysis for Baden-Württemberg based on this model confirm that loss of control is a central factor influencing technology acceptance, but is perceived differently by different socio-demographic groups.

Aufgrund dessen müssen Unternehmen ihre bestehenden Kompetenzen erneuern, indem sie neues Wissen aus der digitalen Sphäre wertstiftend integrieren. Dies stellt jedoch eine erhebliche Herausforderung dar, insbesondere für etablierte Unternehmen, da die konvergente und generative Natur der digitalen Innovation nicht nur den Prozess der Wissensintegration dynamischer macht, sondern auch die Vielfalt und Menge des Wissens erhöht, das über die Unternehmensgrenzen hinweg integriert werden muss. Um diese Herausforderung näher zu beleuchten und Lösungsansätze zu evaluieren, wurden vier Studien durchgeführt und in dieser kumulativen Dissertation zusammengestellt. Diese Studien geben Einblicke in die Besonderheiten der Wissensintegration im Kontext digitaler Innovationen und fördern das Verständnis dafür, wie etablierte Unternehmen die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen bewältigen können. Dabei wird insbesondere der Einsatz von Grenzressourcen, wie bspw. Programmierschnittstellen (APIs), untersucht, da sie einen wesentlichen Mechanismus zur Skalierung der Wissensintegration in digital(isierenden) Geschäftsökosystemen darstellen. In the age of digitalization, companies need to adapt their processes, products, and business models to maintain their capability to innovate and thus to ensure their competitiveness. As a result, companies need to renew their existing competencies by integrating new and valuable knowledge from the digital sphere. However, this poses a significant managerial challenge, especially for established companies, as the convergent and generative nature of digital innovation not only makes the process of knowledge integration more dynamic, but also increases the diversity and amount of knowledge that needs to be integrated across organizational boundaries. To shed more light on this challenge and evaluate possible solutions, four studies were conducted and compiled in this cumulative dissertation. These studies provide insights into the unique nature of knowledge integration in the context of digital innovation and advance the understanding of how incumbent firms can address the associated challenges. In particular, the use of boundary resources such as application programming interfaces (APIs) is examined, as they represent a key mechanism for scaling knowledge integration in digital(izing) business ecosystems.
In an ever more digitized world, it necessary to embed digital technology in business strategy, leading to an overarching phenomenon called the digital business strategy. Accordingly, this thesis sets out to advance the understanding, the digital business strategy concept in general as well as its influence on a company’s performance. At the same time, incumbents are often constrained by path dependencies and inertia as executives tend to make use of prior experiences and favor strategic choices they are familiar with over unfamiliar As a consequence, companies may stick to a specific path which restrains transformational change. Accordingly, the study elucidates the ongoing digital transformation as it manifests itself in the evolution of incumbents’ digital business strategies. In addition, this thesis seeks to derive important implications for business practice, as it helps practitioners to develop a better understanding of digital business strategies, especially considering that digitalization challenges the conventional wisdom of competition. This is particularly important, as with increasing digitalization, tightly integrated digital business strategies will be among the biggest determinants of a company’s future success. In einer immer stärker digitalisierten Welt ist es wichtig digitale Technologien in die Geschäftsstrategie eines Unternehmens einzubetten, was zu einem übergreifenden Phänomen führt, das als digitale Geschäftsstrategie bezeichnet wird. Dementsprechend zielt diese Arbeit darauf ab, das Verständnis des Konzepts der digitalen Geschäftsstrategie im Allgemeinen sowie dessen Einfluss auf die Performance eines Unternehmens zu verbessern. Gleichzeitig sind etablierte Unternehmen oft durch Pfadabhängigkeiten und Trägheit eingeschränkt, da Führungskräfte dazu neigen, auf frühere Erfahrungen zurückzugreifen und strategische Entscheidungen, mit denen sie vertraut sind, gegenüber unbekannten Optionen zu bevorzugen In der Folge verharren Unternehmen auf einem bestimmten strategischen Pfad, was transformatorischen Wandel hemmt. This book provides a detailed overview of governance for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopting a unique integrative approach, it examines the fragmentation of governance that is a critical barrier to achieving the SDGs. The main question addressed is: What are the crucial elements and the organizing logic of an integrative framework that is suitable for analysing governance for the SDGs and for implementing the transitions that we need towards a more sustainable world? This transdisciplinary book first proposes a combination of innovative governance theories that can improve the analysis and practice of sustainability governance. Secondly, it explores the interests of core actors in a number of case examples. And thirdly, it offers recommendations for improving the study and practice of sustainability governance. The findings presented form the basis for a new approach to governance towards objectives such as the SDGs: Integrative Sustainability Governance (ISG). The ensuing ISG framework includes indicator frames within the pillars of power, knowledge and norms.
