Excerpt from Tales of Travel But in the course Of these journeys I visited many other countries and places, twice going round the world, and exploring unfrequented spots, not in Asia only, but in Europe, Africa, and America. In certain of these cases I studied rather deeply some subjects of more than ephem eral interest, I came across some remarkable persons, and I made notes Of many curious scenes. I have found it a 'diversion, in the turmoil of public life, to put these notes into final shape, and have even thought that they might prove Of interest to a larger audience. After I had spent some years in travelling and in writing about my travels, it gave me greater pleasure to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for exploration and research than it did to become a Minister of the Crown; and every moment that I could snatch from politics - before they finally captured and tied me down - I devoted to the pursuit Of my Old love. Excerpt from All the Way Round, the Story of a Fourteen Months Trip, Around the World The lure of the Orient was upon us. India and the Far East were our objective points. But we knew that the Europe of today is not the Europe of yesterday, and as my husband's war work had not permitted him to see much of it while there, and as I had remained at home, we decided not to let the opportunity go by without visiting some of the famous places. During his long years of service as Mayor of Chicago Mr. Harrison's one relaxation was found in his fondness for art. Almost all of his spare moments when in Chi cago are spent at 'the Art Institute, and he had a long ing to visit again the famous galleries of Europe. This decided us. So one day we gathered our little clan children and grandchildren about us, had a royal feast and gaily bade them an revoir! We sailed from New York on a French liner - a slow voyage of ten days which we greatly enjoyed landing in Havre toward the end of May. We had had a beautiful sea voyage, felt in fine feather and made our first stop at Rouen, en route to Paris. Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Excerpt from Travel Stories The Grand Canon of the Colorado River, in northern Arizona, is indeed a world wonder, and there is no other chasm in the world worthy to be compared with it. It is more than two hundred miles long, including Marble Cahon, is from ten to thirteen miles wide in the granite gorge section, and is more than a mile deep. It was created ages and ages ago by the erosive action of water, wind, and frost, and it is still being deepened and widened imperceptibly year by year. Excerpt from Around the World It requires six days to reach San Francisco from Toronto, and although the scenery is grand, the journey becomes rather wearisome. I was reminded of the story of an Englishman and American who were travelling together over the continent. The American said to the Englishman, Well, what do you think of our country, anyway The Englishman pondered for a time, and at last replied, Well, I think it is large. Excerpt from Tales of Adventure and Stories of Travel of Fifty Years Ago These Tales of Adventure and Stories of Travel have been gleaned from many volumes of the 'Annuals' which were so much the rage between fifty and sixty years ago. Although there was much that was trivial in them, and amateur writers rather than literary men filled most of the pages with their contributions, yet among the three hundred volumes that were published between the years 1823 and 1850 there were sure to be some literary efforts deserving of a better fate than to be buried with the rest. Excerpt from A Little Journey Around the World It is the fashion or rather old fashion to begin ones notes with an apology. I have no apology to make in keeping this record, it is written wholly for my friends and is something which I may refer to, to recall my wanderings.
