The favorable reception accorded these essays by omcers of the corps has prompted me to make them available to a wider circle of oficers. In taking this step, I feel that I shall do my share in raising the appreciation in our army of the importance of coiiperation between the pioneers and the other arms, to the end that the technical duties of my corps and its special training in combats for the possession of river crossings may be fully utilized in obtaining tactical success. It is not suficient for leaders and troops to know the principles that govern such combats, as laid down in para graphs 62 - 97, Pioneer Field Manual; they must also be familiar to a certain extent with the technical side of pioneer work in order to appreciate what the pioneers want to do and can do and to understand how important it is that they be supported if full advantage is to be derived from their work.
