African Americans have come a long way in the difficult upward struggle from slavery to the relatively broad freedoms enjoyed today. Together, as a potent and well-knit group, they have battled endlessly in their march toward freedom. Finally, according to psychologist James Davison Jr., the last step to freedom for black Americans has arrived. But, that last step must be taken as individuals - not as a collective. In this assessment of the problems and potentials facing African Americans, Dr. Davison argues that in order for achieving individuals to advance to the final step of freedom, they must break free from the mental shackles created by the black community. The central theme of Sweet Release is that the forces that impinge most upon psychological freedom for black Americans come from within. Guilt for being successful, shame in reaction to the misbehaviors of race peers, demands to give back to the community, and accusations of trying to be white are just a few of the mechanisms that thwart psychological freedom for black persons. Dr. Davison argues that individual lifestyles, aspirations, even identities are constrained by the specter of racial unity. As a result, for black advancers, what remains to be overcome is not the system or them, but internalized community attitudes that put a choke hold on individual freedom. Unafraid of controversy or candid assessment, Dr. Davison addresses these and other thorny issues with psychological insight while offering strategies to move beyond group constrictions toward personal freedom.James Davison Jr., PhD (Sacramento, CA), is a psychologist in private practice and also works in the criminal justice system for the California State Prison system. In addition, he is the author of Prisoners of Our Past.

Sometimes survival isn’t just about staying alive… Widowed and alone on the frontier, Elspeth Stewart will do whatever it takes to protect herself and her unborn child from the dangers of the wilderness and of men. Though her youthful beauty doesn’t show it, she is broken and scarred from the way men have treated her. So when a stranger wanders onto Bethie’s land, wounded and needing her aid, she takes no risks, tying him to the bed and hiding his weapons before ministering to his injuries. But Bethie’s defenses cannot keep Nicholas Kenleigh from breaking down her emotional walls. The scars on his body speak of a violent past, but his gentleness, warmth, and piercing eyes arouse longings in her that she never imagined she had. As Nicholas and Bethie reveal to each other both their hidden desires and their tortured secrets, they discover that riding the flames of their passion might be the key to burning away the nightmares of their pasts.

I have had depression my whole life. Some days it was uncontrollable. Other days it had no effect on my days. I have pulled myself out of the pits of hell in my own mind, and believe me when I say I would have much rather died. Everything in this book was what I was feeling in the moment—the hate, the pain, and the rebirth, becoming new and leaving the old ways there. Don’t get me wrong; when you read some of the poems, you might not understand what I was going through, but I promise I am better now. If my family is reading, I’m sorry if you feel like it was never enough or the way I wrote this makes you feel uneasy or less of a person. Understand, please, that it is not my intention. I was and am only trying to work out the things in my mind. And I can only hope two things: (1) to whoever ends up reading this, there is always a way to come out stronger than this mental illness, and (2) to my family, please understand none of this means I don’t love you or have hatred toward you; that is not true. I love you. Enough of that, right. You wanted to read inside someone’s mind. Let’s get started. Let’s take a walk through a young girl’s mind.
Tells the story of Josh and Avery's relationship, alternating between their individual points of view. Josh : It is enough to break any man: watching what could have been my future slip away before it was ever in my grasp. The possibility of losing someone I loved, before she was even mine, is something I never would have imagined. Certainly nothing I'd ever wish on anyone. I go to her every day and wait. Wait for the impossible, for a sign, for her to look at me ... hoping sinners are granted miracles, too. Avery : Just one glimpse of him was all it took. In the next lane, at a stop light, was the man I would fall in love with and marry. People talk about the kind of love that takes time - love you fall in to. We were more like a crash and burn, and when our lives intertwined I would never be the same. He was the man I would cherish the rest of my life, who would father my children. In an instant our life together began, and in an instant it would end. The late nights; the excuses; the lies. And in the blink of an eye, it was like we never were.
