Global textile production chains are currently under pressure to become more sustainable. The Nordic Council of Ministers Working Group on Sustainable Consumption and Production has initiated a pilot project in order to understand how stakeholders in global textile production chains can support the pace of change, through the application of Eco-labels and environmental management systems in Tirupur, India where Zero Liquid Discharge norms for dye factories have been implemented, as well as improved labour practices and social and human rights. Nordic textile companies can benefit more from this development and encourage producers to continue on this track. This project conducted capacity building programs on ecolabelling, seminars in Norway, Finland and Denmark and a Buyer Seller Meet in Denmark. It´s recommended that the NCM supports further needed efforts for sustainable textiles.
This report provides a thorough analysis concerning the situation in Tirupur, India, where the local government has imposed strict requirements on zero liquid discharge of wastewater in textile production. The report analyses how Tirupur can turn the Zero Liquid Discharge re-quirements into a competitive advantage by creating a green textile cluster based on the European Eco-label Flower and ISO 14001. Applications of Biotechnology for Sustainable Textile Production is a practical guide to the fundamentals, methods, and future prospects for sustainable biotechnological and nanobiotechnological approaches to textile production. The textile industry is highly motivated to reduce its use of natural resources, reduce waste, and cost. Processes such as dyeing, printing and finishing fabrics traditionally require a lot of water and can produce hazardous wastes as a by-product. This steering Group is jointly responsible for the direction and decisions regarding the project. NAG has been coordinating the work. Coordinator of project has been Yvonne Augustsson from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
