Refugee research and debate have focused on international agreements, border controls and the legal status of asylum seekers. The lived, daily life of refugees in different phases of their flight has thus been unduly neglected. How have refugees experienced policies of reception and resettlement, and how have they individually and collectively built up their own cultures of exile? To answer these questions the author of this study has undertaken long-term fieldwork as a community worker in a Norwegian municipality. Refugees from Chile, Iran, Somalia, Bosnia and Vietnam were on occasions subjected to exclusionary and discriminatory practices. Nevertheless, restistance was seen in the form of a Somali women's sewing circle, the organisation of a multi-cultural youth club, running refugee associations and printing their own language newspapers. Moreover, in activities such as these, refugees addressed and came to terms with a limited number of shared existential concerns: morality, violence, sexuality, family reunion, belonging and not belonging to a second generation. Drawing upon these experiences a general theory of refugeeness is proposed. It states that the cultures refugees create in exile are the necessary prerequisite for self-recognition and survival.

The Ethics of Survival in Contemporary Literature and Culture delves into the complex problems involved in all attempts to survive. The essays analyze survival in contemporary prose narratives, short stories, poems, dramas, and theoretical texts, but also in films and other modes of cultural practices. Addressing diverse topics such as memory and forgetting in Holocaust narratives, stories of refugees and asylum seekers, and representations of war, the ethical implications involved in survival in texts and media are brought into a transnational critical discussion. The volume will be of potential interest to a wide range of critics working on ethical issues, the body, and the politics of art and literature.
International treaties, conventions, and organizations to protect refugees were established in the aftermath of World War II to protect people escaping targeted persecution by their own governments. However, the nature of cross-border displacement has transformed dramatically since then. Such threats as environmental change, food insecurity, and generalized violence force massive numbers of people to flee states that are unable or unwilling to ensure their basic rights, as do conditions in failed and fragile states that make possible human rights deprivations. Because these reasons do not meet the legal understanding of persecution, the victims of these circumstances are not usually recognized as "refugees," preventing current institutions from ensuring their protection.In this book, Alexander Betts develops the concept of "survival migration" to highlight the crisis in which these people find themselves. Examining flight from three of the most fragile states in Africa—Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia—Betts explains variation in institutional responses across the neighboring host states. There is massive inconsistency. Some survival migrants are offered asylum as refugees; others are rounded up, detained, and deported, often in brutal conditions. The inadequacies of the current refugee regime are a disaster for human rights and gravely threaten international security. In Survival Migration, Betts outlines these failings, illustrates the enormous human suffering that results, and argues strongly for an expansion of protected categories.
How do refugees cope? Almost all have seen a loved one die because of war. One saw a loved one burned to death. One set of parents are missing a daughter that was stolen in the night. The more I know them and the more they communicate, the more I hear of the terrible horrors they endured. Many are still hoping to find that lost daughter or son. So many of my students have health issues because of abuse. I am seeing the aftermath of war before my eyes, the damage done. They have often told me they pray, pray, and pray. I have seen them pray for hours. This is their comfort and their strength. They know firsthand of not being able to control what happens in their life during war time so they are quick to place their life into the hands of a loving God. They never blame God and are quick to thank him for answered prayers. They know evil is evil and God is good all the time. They never doubt it. They have been in hell, and they are sure of Heaven. It's as simple as that.

Survival in Paradise: Sketches From a Refugee Life in Curaao is a funny, moving memoir of growing up in the Caribbean West Indies, in the aftermath of World War Two. The narrative covers Manfreds childhood and adolescent years in Suriname and Curacao between 1942 to 1951, focusing on his development between the ages of eight and seventeen. In doing so, it renders through specific moments the long, sad shadow cast by the war over the refugees. In Curacao, the Wolf familys life was shaped by three occasionally clashing cultures: colonial Dutch, native Curaaoan, and, of course, the refugee culture itself. The family found itself surrounded by a joyous tropical culture, one to which, as a boy, Manfred yearned to belong. Meanwhile, his parents, each in their own way, brooded about the horrors so recently experienced and never fully left behind.
