I loved Sunday school because I loved the songs. The songs we sang during my weekly forty-five-minute Sunday school hour taught me about Jesus and love and salvation. Songs like "Deep and Wide" taught me about the immensity of God's love for me. "This Little Light of Mine" reminded me how Jesus gave me the responsibility to shine my light so others could learn about Him. "The B-I-B-L-E'" helped me to understand the importance of reading God's Word and using it to guide my life. "Joy in My Heart" instilled in me that I could have joy, no matter what, because I had Jesus. "The Apostle's Song" not only listed the name of Jesus' disciples but convinced me that I could be Jesus' disciple, too. Christians have a responsibility to search the Scriptures, moving from basic biblical truths to more advanced principles of Christianity, all the while growing in the knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ. With that being said, however, I think it is helpful as maturing Christians to be reminded of simple truths. It is these basic truths of God's Word that guide us, encourage us, anchor us, and serve as a solid foundation for more study and greater contemplation of Biblical concepts and truths. Children need to learn that "Jesus loves me, this I know," but adults need to be reminded of this beautiful truth as well. I hope you enjoy this adventure as you remember songs you sang as children and hear them in a new and more profound way as maturing Christian adults.
