This is a report on the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of the aging of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Compared to research on the aging of asphalt cement, there has been little research on the aging of asphalt mixtures. Binder studies are considered as well as mixture sutdies, the relationship between laboratory aging tests and field performance, and the relationship between chemical composition and field performance. Recommendations are made for aging procedures which show promise for laboratory investigation. Test methods to evaluate aging are also considered. It is noted that extended heating procedures show the most promise for short-term aging and pressure oxidation and/or extended heating the most promise for long-term aging.
The level of research activity in the highway sector as a whole has declined precipitously in recent decades, whilst the challenges facing US state highway agencies have escalated. As a result, a Strategic Highway Research Program - SHRP) was initiated to establish collaboration with research bodies tackling similar highway problems in countries worldwide. This collection of reports from around the world presents SHRP`s progress towards providing research-based new products from which the international highway engineering community may benefit. SHRP concentrates on six high-priority research areas: asphaltic materials; pavement performance; cement and concrete; maintenance cost effectiveness; concrete bridge component protection systems and the chemical control of snow and ice.
This report summarizes the research devoted to three key aspects of the Superpave Level I mix design: volumetric mix design criteria for aggregates and mixes; compaction; and mix conditioning. The first chapter describes the Delphi group process that was used to select aggregate properties and specification values included in the Level I mix design procedure. Chapter 2 addresses the rationale for the selection of the gyratory compactor, its relations to field control, and validation. The final chapter summarizes the research associated with the development and validation of laboratory conditioning procedures for asphalt concrete mixes. It describes the procedures used to simulate both short- and long-term aging, as well as moisture sensitivity under repeated loading.
This book presents the detailed results of five task groups of the RILEM technical committee TC 237-SIB on Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems. It concentrates on specific new topics in asphalt binder and mixture testing, dealing with new developments in asphalt testing, in particular also in view of new innovative bituminous materials, such as hot and cold recycled mixtures, grid reinforced pavements and recycled Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP), where test methods developed for traditional asphalt concrete are not a priori applicable. The main objective is providing a basis for pre-standardization by comparing different test methods and showing ways for fundamental improvements. Thus, the book also points the way for a further advanced chemo-physical understanding of materials and their role in pavement systems relying on fundamental material properties and suitable models for describing and predicting the intrinsic mechanisms that determine the material behavior.
