(dalla Prefazione di Mirella Raganato) «We are instantly swept away by words that evoke past and present worlds, by means of a synesthetic use of images and colors, symbols and signs. Like thirsting pilgrims, we share in her world and her elegant way of being woman, lover, daughter, and friend. Inebriated, almost dazed, we stop to catch our breath, to make every creative impulse our own, to become an integral part of the story we read. Before us, in a magical and fairytalelike manner, words unveil their meaning, at times harsh and recondite, at times sensual and maternal». In those years, Europe was full of bonfires committed to make a clean sweep of witches. At the same time a young scientist: Sybilla Merian, daughter of the well-known German engraver Matthaeus Merian, was instead committed to studying, and illustrating the microscopic world of insects, caterpillars and butterflies and the little bigger world of flowers, plants and animals. The wonderful metamorphosis of caterpillars was the basis of her best work: Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, published in Amsterdam in 1705. The work carried out by Sibylla Merian is fantastic. Indeed, during that time, it was unusual to deal with insects - the beasts of Satan. Her drawings of plants, snakes, spiders, iguanas and tropical beetles are still considered masterpieces and are sought-after by collectors around the world. Another great master, the English entomologist Moses Harris, contributed to complete the volume with his interesting engravings.

The noblest book of the year' Anita Brookner, SPECTATOR 'Read an essay or two every few days; it'll be like meeting him in a Turin cafe, hearing him talk of wonderful, funny and horrible things in his gentle, dry voce, with all the virtues of his chemist's training - 'humility, patience and method', a wonderful nose and eye, and a steady hand' NEW STATESMAN & SOCIETY 'Everything Primo Levi has ever written is well worth reading, and this collection is no exception' THE TIMES 'There is no contest. Silent films were, of course, never silent at all. However, the sound that used to accompany the screen picture in the early days of cinema has been neglected as an area of study. Altman explores the various musical, narrative, and even synchronized sound systems that enriched cinema before Jolson spoke.
This open access book offers essential information on values-based practice (VBP): the clinical skills involved, teamwork and person-centered care, links between values and evidence, and the importance of partnerships in shared decision-making. Different cultures have different values; for example, partnership in decision-making looks very different, from the highly individualized perspective of European and North American cultures to the collective and family-oriented perspectives common in South East Asia. In turn, African cultures offer yet another perspective, one that falls between these two extremes (called batho pele). The book will benefit everyone concerned with the practical challenges of delivering mental health services. Accordingly, all contributions are developed on the basis of case vignettes, and cover a range of situations in which values underlie tensions or uncertainties regarding how to proceed in clinical practice. Examples include the patient’s autonomy and best interest, the physician’s commitment to establishing high standards of clinical governance, clinical versus community best interest, institutional versus clinical interests, patients insisting on medically unsound but legal treatments etc. Thus far, VBP publications have mainly dealt with clinical scenarios involving individual values (of clinicians and patients). Our objective with this book is to develop a model of VBP that is culturally much broader in scope. As such, it offers a vital resource for mental health stakeholders in an increasingly inter-connected world. It also offers opportunities for cross-learning in values-based practice between cultures with very different clinical care traditions.
