Concerns about the effects of global climate change have focused attention on the vulnerability of circumpolar regions. This book offers a synthesis of the spectrum of techniques available for generating long-term environmental records from circumpolar lakes.
The analysis of vegetation history is one of the prime objectives for vegetation scientists. In order to understand the recent composition of local floras and plant communities a second knowledge of species com position during recent millenia is essential. With the present concern over climate changes, due to human activities, an understanding of past vegeta tion distribution becomes even more important, since the correlation between climate and vegetation can often be used to predict possible impacts to crops and forests. I was very fortunate to receive the help of Drs. Webb and Huntley to compile this volume on vegetation history. They have collated an impres sive set of papers which together give an account of the vegetation history of most of the continents during the late-Tertiary and Quaternery periods. There are, however, gaps in the coverage achieved, most notably Africa, and Asia apart from Japan. The information in this book will nonetheless certainly be used widely by vegetation scientists for the regions covered in the book and much of it has relevance to the areas not explicitly described. The authors of the individual chapters have done their best to cover recent topics of interest as well as established facts. It is intended that a separate volume will be produced in the near future covering the vegetation history of Africa and Asia. I thank the editors of It fits well into the this volume for their commendable achievement.

This volume was developed to meet a much noted need for accessible case study material for courses in human ecology, cultural ecology, cultural geography, and other subjects increasingly offered to fulfill renewed student and faculty interest in environmental issues. The case studies, all taken from the journal Human Ecology: An Interdisciplinary Jouma~ represent a broad cross-section of contemporary research. It is tempting but inaccurate to sug gest that these represent the "Best of Human Ecology." They were selected from among many outstanding possibilities because they worked well with the organization of the book which, in turn, reflects the way in which courses in human ecology are often organized. This book provides a useful sample of case studies in the application of the perspective of human ecology to a wide variety of problems in dif ferent regions of the world. University courses in human ecology typically begin with basic concepts pertaining to energy flow, feeding relations, ma terial cycles, population dynamics, and ecosystem properties, and then take up illustrative case studies of human-environmental interactions. These are usually discussed either along the lines of distinctive strategies of food pro curement (such as foraging or pastoralism) or as adaptations to specific habitat types or biomes (such as the circumpolar regions or arid lands).
Phytogeographically and climatically West Greenland includes parts of the low arctic and high arctic areas. The present vegetation and a summary of its history since the last glaciation based on pollen and macrofossil analyses are briefly described. The determination of more than 55,000 herbarium sheets of native phanerogams has been checked. Before preparing the dot maps it was necessary to decide at which level taxonomically difficult genera (eg: Antennaria, Draba, Poa, Puccinellia, and Stellaria would be treated). For all of these the criteria used are given. Dot maps have been prepared for 379 taxa. These maps have been grouped into 11 West Greenland distribution types, which clearly correlate with T W Böcher's biological distribution types (Böcher 1963). The collecting intensity in the large area is rather uneven. This is illustrated by a map giving the number of collections at the 305 localities from which 50 or more collections are at hand. Another map giving the number of taxa at 29 well-investigated localities illustrates the species diversity in the region. Most low arctic localities have more than 130 taxa, with 215 at the richest locality (Godhavn / Qeqertarsuaq on Disko), while the number at no high arctic locality exceeds lS0. Reference to the corresponding numbers in other parts of Greenland is given. Based on the dot maps a new delimitation of West Greenland in floristic provinces and districts is presented. It differs somewhat from that in Grønlands Flora / The Flora of Greenland (Böcher et al. 1957, and later editions). The major alteration is that the boundary between the low and high arctic phytogeographic provinces is now placed through north Disko - Nuussuaq. As a consequence of this the southernmost district in the high arctic is divided into an outer (NWso) and an inner province (NWsi). Minor alterations are suggested in the southern part of West Greenland.
