This book is the result of a NATO sponsored workshop entitled "Student Modelling: The Key to Individualized Knowledge-Based Instruction" which was held May 4-8, 1991 at Ste. Adele, Quebec, Canada. The workshop was co-directed by Gordon McCalla and Jim Greer of the ARIES Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan. The workshop focused on the problem of student modelling in intelligent tutoring systems. An intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a computer program that is aimed at providing knowledgeable, individualized instruction in a one-on-one interaction with a learner. In order to individualize this interaction, the ITS must keep track of many aspects of the leamer: how much and what he or she has leamed to date; what leaming styles seem to be successful for the student and what seem to be less successful; what deeper mental models the student may have; motivational and affective dimensions impacting the leamer; and so ono Student modelling is the problem of keeping track of alI of these aspects of a leamer's leaming.
This volume constitutes the selected papers of the 5th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research, MTSR 2011, held in Izmir, Turkey, in October 2011. The 36 full papers presented together with 16 short papers and project reports were carefully reviewed and selected from 118 submissions. This publication covers papers presented at AIED2009, part of an ongoing series of biennial international conferences for top quality research in intelligent systems and cognitive science for educational computing applications. The conference provides opportunities for the cross-fertilization of techniques from many fields that make up this interdisciplinary research area, including: artificial intelligence, computer science, cognitive and learning sciences, education, educational technology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and the many domain-specific areas for which AIED systems have been designed and evaluated. AIED2009 focuses on the theme "Building learning systems that care: from knowledge representation to affective modelling". The key research question is how to tackle the complex issues related to building learning systems that care, ranging from representing knowledge and context to modelling social, cognitive, metacognitive, and affective dimensions. This requires multidisciplinary research that links theory and technology from artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computer science with theory and practice from education and the social sciences.
The 33 revised full papers and 30 poster summaries presented together with papers of 12 selected doctoral consortium articles and the abstracts of 3 invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 160 submissions. The book offers topical sections on adaptive hypermedia, affective computing, data mining for personalization and cross-recommendation, ITS and adaptive advice, modeling and recognizing human activity, multimodality and ubiquitous computing, recommender systems, student modeling, user modeling and interactive systems, and Web site navigation support.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the Second International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization, held on Big Island, HI, USA, in June 2010. This annual conference was merged from the biennial conference series User Modeling, UM, and the conference on Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems, AH. The 26 long papers and 6 short papers presented together with 7 doctoral consortium papers, 2 invited talks, and 4 industry panel papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 161 submissions. The KES conferences attract a wide range of interest. The broad focus of the c- ference series is the theory and applications of computational intelligence and em- gent technologies. Once purely a research field, intelligent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated into many conventional appli- tion areas. The quest to encapsulate human knowledge and capabilities in domains such as reasoning, problem solving, sensory analysis, and other complex areas has been avidly pursued. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence, CAEPIA 2009, held in Seville, Spain, in November 2009, in conjunction with the Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Technology Transfer, TTIA 2009. The 31 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 125 submissions. The papers address the following topics: machine learning, multiagents, natural language, planning, diagnosis, evolutive algorithms and neural networks, knowledge representation and engineering, tutoring systems, uncertainty bayesian networks, vision, and applications.
The first International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) was held ten years ago in Montreal (ITS ’88). It was so well received by the international community that the organizers decided to do it again in Montreal four years later, in 1992, and then again in 1996. ITS ’98 differs from the previous ones in that this is the first time the conference has been held outside of Montreal, and it’s only been two years (not four) since the last one. One interesting aspect of the ITS conferences is that they are not explicitly bound to some organization (e.g., IEEE or AACE). Rather, the founder of these conferences, Claude Frasson, started them as a means to congregate researchers actively involved in the ITS field and provide a forum for presentation and debate of the most currently challenging issues. Thus the unifying theme is science. This year’s “hot topics” differ from those in the earlier ITS conferences as they reflect ever changing trends in ITS research. A few of the issues being examined at ITS ’98 include: Web based tutoring systems, deploying ITS in the real world, tutoring and authoring tools, architectures, and knowledge structure and representation.
