This book is comprised of nineteen chapters written by scholars with expertise on immigrant families representing every corner of the globe_from Africa and India to Europe and Central America. It provides a springboard from which to answer the application and 'what now' questions for those who work with immigrant families in a variety of capacities_from academicians and researchers to educators and human-service providers.
Immigration to America is an issue that often sparks intense emotional reactions_from passion and compassion to anger and even rage. Often missing from the dialogue, however, is discussion of the strengths of immigrant newcomers_the abilities and positive characteristics they bring as individuals and families to our country, and how these contribute to the agency, growth, and vitality of America. This book was intended to move the discussion of immigration, generally speaking, and of immigrant families specifically, to include how and in what ways new immigrants to America (those arriving within the past thirty years) have changed the social and geocultural landscape of this country in positive, beneficial, and valuable ways. The book is comprised of nineteen chapters written by scholars with expertise on immigrant families representing every corner of the globe_from Africa and India to Europe and Central America. In each chapter, the unique factors, processes, and worldviews which help shape and mold the immigrant experience are articulated, as are the strengths immigrant newcomers bring to America. In addition, beyond explicating the strengths of immigrant families, each of the nineteen contributing chapters focuses on the implications of these strengths for families, communities, and the culture. Thus, the book provides a springboard from which to answer the application and 'what now' questions for those who work with immigrant families in a variety of capacities_from academicians and researchers to educators and human-service providers.
This book is a product of research stemming from a multiyear project conducted by Elzbieta M. Gozdziak and Micah N. Bump for the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University. The project studied immigration integration in areas that had no recent experience with foreign-born newcomers and the information presented within this book builds upon this by identifying and reviewing promising practices and strategies that facilitated immigrant integration. Gozdziak and Bump include descriptions of the most effective approaches as well as an analysis of challenges within resettlement programs. By highlighting successful initiatives in newcomer communities it seeks to assist stakeholders in their decision-making processes. As newcomer-related issues are complex and solutions are rarely "one-size fits all," the programs described here are unique responses to particular issues in individual communities, and they may not be an exact fit for other communities with similar problems. The book is not a cookbook or a blueprint that can be applied anywhere and everywhere. Rather, it is meant as inspiration and motivation for trying out new strategies. Successful practices discussed in this book include: programs facilitating English language acquisition, access to culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate health care services, access to vocational training and higher education opportunities, community development, microenterprise, creation of homeownership opportunities for immigrants, and efforts to ensure safety of newcomers. It is the hope of the authors that many practitioners—including service providers, community leaders, representatives of local governments, and donors both public and private—will find this book useful.
Immigrant children and youth are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. However, relevant public policy is shaped less by informed discussion than by politicized contention over welfare reform and immigration limits. From Generation to Generation explores what we know about the development of white, black, Hispanic, and Asian children and youth from numerous countries of origin. Describing the status of immigrant children and youth as "severely understudied," the committee both draws on and supplements existing research to characterize the current status and outlook of immigrant children. The book discusses the many factorsâ€"family size, fluency in English, parent employment, acculturation, delivery of health and social services, and public policiesâ€"that shape the outlook for the lives of these children and youth. The committee makes recommendations for improved research and data collection designed to advance knowledge about these children and, as a result, their visibility in current policy debates.

Children in immigrant families account for nearly one-in-four children in the U.S. They are the fastest growing population of children, and they are leading the nation's racial and ethnic transformation. As a consequence, baby-boomers will depend heavily for economic support during retirement on race-ethnic minorities, many of whom grew up in immigrant families. Because the current circumstances and future prospects of children in immigrant families are important not only to these children themselves, but to all Americans, this report uses data from Census 2000 to portray the lives of children with immigrant parents and highlights policy and program initiatives that will foster the future success of these children. This report begins by discussing the diverse origins and destinations of children in immigrant families. It then highlights substantial evidence that children in immigrant families have deep roots in the U.S. reflected in their own citizenship, as well as their parents' citizenship and length of residence in this country, their own and their parents' English fluency, and their family commitment to homeownership. Based on a new alternative to the official poverty measure, the report continues by discussing economic challenges confronted by many immigrant families. It also portrays additional immigrant strengths and challenges associated with family composition, parental education and employment, and access for children of immigrants to early education and the later years of schooling. Looking toward fostering a successful future for these children, the report identifies promising policy and programmatic initiatives for language and literacy training, and for assuring access to education, health, and other essential services, and it identifies immigrant-related questions that should be asked in all research studies involving children and families. This compilation opens with a study that seeks to understand the ways in which various parent involvement behaviors impact Hmong elementary students' academic abilities in reading and math, also investigating whether or not Hmong students' English proficiency moderates these relationships.The subsequent study focuses on the interrelation between family factors, child-rearing conditions, parents' mindset and formation of civic and ethnic identity of teenagers in mono-ethnic and interethnic families of migrants.The authors go on to present the systemic and cultural stressors voiced specifically by Mexican-American youth, providing implications for community-based participatory research, intervention work, and advocacy.Following this, they assess the outcomes of a school intervention program aimed at improving interethnic relations among primary school children in Italy through foreign language learning activities.The academic achievements and educational trajectories of the children of immigrants in Austria are examined.
