The effects of the geologic factors mentioned above were evaluated by integrating mineralogical data for large numbers of samples with both published information and personal field observations on the tectonic history and depositional environments of the sediments studied. By such an approach, the writer hoped to draw a coherent picture of the interplay of source area, transportation, and diagenesis effects upon the mineralogy of clay sediments over the time span represented by the samples.
