Natural hazard-induced disasters (NHID), such as floods, droughts, severe storms, and animal pests and diseases have significant, widespread and long-lasting impacts on agricultural sectors around the world. Drawing from seven case studies, this joint OECD-FAO report argues for a new approach to building resilience to NHID in agriculture.
To leave no child behind, UNESCO developed the first global report of this scope onboys’ disengagement from education, bringing together qualitative and quantitativeevidence from over 140 countries. This report provides an overview on the globalsituation on boys’ disengagement from and disadvantage in education. It identifiesfactors influencing boys’ participation, progression and learning outcomes ineducation. It also analyses responses by governments and partners, and examinespromising policies and programmes. Finally, it includes recommendations on how tore-engage boys with education and address disadvantage.While girls continue to face severe disadvantages andinequalities in education, the report shows that boys inmany countries are at greater risk than girls of repeatinggrades, failing to complete different education levelsand having poorer learning outcomes in school. Noless than 132 million boys of primary and secondaryschool age are out of school. They urgently requiresupport.As this report shows, supporting boys does notmean that girls lose out and vice versa. Addressingboys’ disengagement not only benefits boys’ learning,employment opportunities, income and well-being, itis also highly beneficial for achieving gender equality anddesirable economic, social and health outcomes.
This review, developed in partnership with UNICEF, provides Georgia with recommendations to strengthen its evaluation and assessment system to focus on helping students learn. It will be of interest to countries that wish to strengthen their own evaluation and assessment systems and, in turn, improve educational outcomes.
WIPO Re:Search has come a long way over the past five years since its inception. Initially, it was intended to demonstrate that IP could help facilitate innovation in health and catalyze new research and development. This demonstration has been achieved. Based on the recommendations of an external strategic review of WIPO Re:Search, this Strategic Plan, developed in a collaborative manner with all WIPO Re:Search Members, charts the way forward based on several principles: the positive value of IP; the need for a proactive partnering mechanism; a long-term perspective of potential contribution to product development; the importance of capacity building for IP management and for research; the importance of mobilizing additional resources for partnering and for collaborations; and the value of broader understanding of IP, research and WIPO Re:Search itself.
This case study focuses on the Republic of Namibia’s ex ante approach to preventing, controlling, and managing animal pest and disease outbreaks, which are often exacerbated by climate-related disasters, such as floods and droughts. It explores the good practices implemented by Namibia to reduce disaster risks, including: • controlling livestock movement through a zoning strategy and movement permits; • conducting import risk assessments; • disease monitoring and surveillance; • an animal identification and traceability system; • undertaking annual vaccinations; and • contingency plans. The implementation of these measures will: • enable Namibia to more effectively prevent, control and manage animal disease outbreaks so that food security, incomes and livelihoods are secured; • ensure that Namibia’s meat is disease free and meets safety standards in export markets; and • protect public health by preventing the transmission of zoonotic diseases between wildlife and livestock, and then to humans.

This PEFA assessment provides a snapshot of the country’s PFM system performance in order to support the government in defining PFM reform priorities. The previous assessment was conducted in 2015, therefore the current assessment follows after the recommended time period between the two assessments. Furthermore, the scope and objectives of the reforms initiated and implemented in the intervening period makes tracking the change in the PFM system needed and meaningful. The assessment was conducted by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, with the Ministry of Finance and other relevant country institutions being the primary beneficiaries of the assessment.
