This book traces a century of militarised communication that began in the United States in April, 1917, with the institution of the Committee on Public Information (CPI), headed by George Creel and tasked with persuading a divided US public to enter World War I. Creel achieved an historic feat of communication: a nationalising mass mediation event well before any instantaneous mass media technologies were available. The CPI’s techniques and strategies have underpinned marketing, public relations, and public diplomacy practices ever since. The book argues that the CPI’s influence extends unbroken into the present day, as it provided the communicative and attitudinal bases for a new form of political economy, a form of corporatism, that would come to its fullest flower in the “globalisation” project of the mid-1990s.

The history of crisis management shows that companies embark on particular strategies in response to crisis. So why are some companies’ crisis communication strategies successful, while others are not? The purpose of this book is to broaden the existing knowledge of crisis response strategies by focusing on corporate identity as one of the factors that is most likely to influence their choice. Drawing upon insights from the sensemaking and chaos theories, as well as traditional and alternative, non-European, approaches to strategy formation, Olga Bloch contends that there is a reciprocal relationship between corporate identity and crisis response strategies. This relationship is examined on the example of Toyota Motor Corporation’s communication in response to a crisis caused by a series of recalls of its vehicles in 2009-2010.

This book is an evidence-based approach to handling common, extreme crises. Extreme crises involve strong moral outrage; moral outrage creates situations where traditional crisis communication advice no longer is effective. These extreme crises create unique demands for crisis managers. Moreover, much of the traditional advice and crisis key performance indicators (KPIs) no longer apply.
