Murtha was one of the notable experimental writers of the 1920s, but his work has been largely ignored by literary historians. Thomas Murtha was a classmate and colleague of other notable Canadians including former prime minister Paul Martin, Morley Callaghan, and Raymond Knister. Callaghan, Murtha, and Knister greatly influenced each others' work. Socializations in Igbo societies indoctrinate members to subconsciously defer to cultural norms. One of the reasons, I believe, is the action and reward belief systems of traditional and Christian religions. While traditional religion instantly rewards actions, good or bad, Christian religion on the other hand prolongs the rewards to the point that people often disregard their consequences. The cultural beliefs that underpin many of these stories are profound. The dilemma of straddling between traditional and Christian beliefs, can be enervating. Since the latter, over a hundred books on Faulkner have been completed, along with hundreds of articles and dissertations. This work lists all new items, often with extensive annotations, and provides separate entries for chapters of books that cover individual novels and stories. Bassett's introductory essay provides an overview of the last decade of Faulkner studies, the first in which post-structuralist and other newer forms of criticism had a major impact on Faulkner studies.
