ALS, Baton Rouge, of Barron, to "Dear Brother," discussing military matters and life in the army.
Autograph letter signed, from Stephen Berry, to Hugh D. McLellan, of Gorham, Me., pertaining to a printing estimate.
Written to a man at 356 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Stephen Procter writes from Columbia [Virginia] to his brother, William Procter, Jr., S.W. Corner of 9th & Lombard Sts. in Philadelphia, 7 November 1849. Before answering his brother’s two or three letters, he complains, “I have only succeeded in deciphering portions of the past as owing to some rough usage on the road the case of Ext [extract of] Cannabis saturated the greater portion of it rendering the writing illegible, so if I fail to notice any portion of it thee will know to what to attribute it.” He continues by congratulating his brother on his new marriage and noticing that he (William) shall content himself as an “old Bachelor.” William describes his business affairs of the recent year and a half, from arriving with a letter of introduction to the merchant, Mr. W.O. Chilton, to first having a partnership with Dr, Berry then proceeding more successfully on his own, selling medicines. He returns to the initial topic: “The last lot of Ext of hemp turns out a failure, it is inert. I regret this as I think when good it will form a very useful remedy. Should thee ever meet with a direct importation from India thee will oblige me by sending me a sample if of it. It seems rather strange that the original is so hard to procure.”
