THE LANGUAGE OF MY SOULHeavenly Father, Only You speak the language of my soul. Your Spirit sharing the words, making me whole. My soul stands before You, tattered, fragmented and confused. I found man's words far too impotent to be adequate or to be used. The heart-cry speaks and ebbs a different type of word, beyond the reach of human lips, it's vernacular almost absurd. I need a unique communiqué, one proclaiming the deepest hopes in my soul. I dig deeper and search harder. Will this, my heart's story continue quiet and remain untold? Father, teach me this voice, words that my soul can give. Help me reach up from out of the pit; I must cry out if I am to live.My spirit is broken and contrite, capable, ready to hear. Speak through the confusion; let me touch Your face, and see Your image that I might draw near!In prayer I found my answer; a touch to my soul giving perfect peace. No more silent screams in the night; my heart has been set at ease. The language of my soul, I found in this, my new Heaven-Speak, and only three in the universe are fluent...Jesus, my Father and me! ‘Quid est sacramentum?’ Visual Representation of Sacred Mysteries in Early Modern Europe, 1400–1700 investigates how sacred mysteries (in Latin, sacramenta or mysteria) were visualized in a wide range of media, including illustrated religious literature such as catechisms, prayerbooks, meditative treatises, and emblem books, produced in Italy, France, and the Low Countries between ca. 1500 and 1700. The contributors ask why the mysteries of faith and, in particular, sacramental mysteries were construed as amenable to processes of representation and figuration, and why the resultant images were thought capable of engaging mortal eyes, minds, and hearts. Mysteries by their very nature appeal to the spirit, rather than to sense or reason, since they operate beyond the limitations of the human faculties; and yet, the visual and literary arts served as vehicles for the dissemination of these mysteries and for prompting reflection upon them.
