More than a history of the Rotary club, this book chronicles Springfield's history through the actions of a select group of individuals who called themselves Rotarians and came together for fellowship and to improve their community. The clubs' earliest days are recorded, starting with the first Rotary meeting in Springfield--suggested by local realtor Harry Kissell. Through the fellowship of Rotary, Springfield's "movers and shakers" stayed informed and used their connections to amicably resolve issues and promote projects that were beneficial to their community. Led by the Rotary motto of "service above self," the breadth and depth of the club's service is astonishing. In 1919, Rotarians decided to assist Clark County children with disabilities and joined a statewide movement that almost became an international Rotary project. In addition to the club's ongoing services to children with disabilities, it added other programs for local youth. Then Rotarians reached out to help eliminate a dreaded disease that was crippling the world's children--polio. Sometimes amusing, the history of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ohio, is always informative and inspirational as it traces the first century of service by Rotarians to their community and the world.
