The usual depth of planting is from four to five inches, with full-sized corms spaced 4 to 6 inches apart, in single (or double) rows, which may be two and a half or three feet apart. Tillage should be thorough and continuous throughout the season. Cultivate after every rain (or after watering) to keep the soil surface loose. This is important, especially if rapid increase is desired. Increase is slow in compact or dry soil. (see page 23, re mulch ing with peat). The whole area embraces only about eight or ten acres, on which are two small buildings used as tool and packing houses. The roots are packed in fresh sphagnum moss, which is a great benefit and safeguard if delayed in transit.
