Excerpt from Spiritual Torrents But, although it is the strong conviction of the translator, that those points in Madame. Guyon which have been most excepted to, and have most provoked controversy, are most in agreement with the doctrine of life Of the New Church, still he does not design to recom mend this Or any of her works, in any other point of view than as containing popular statements of what, in the writings of the New Church; is stated more truly, more widely, and with scientific preci sion. They are a presentation in the concrete of what is given by Swedenborg in the abstract form; and so will be useful in explaining, confirming, and, through the medium of the affections, enforcing, his higher and truer developments of a Divine Truth. The soul feels then that it was not created for the amusements and trifles of the world, but that it has a centre and an end, to which it must be its aim to return, and out of which it can never find true repose. This instinct is very deeply implanted in the soul, more or less in different cases, according to the designs of God; but all have a loving impatience to purify themselves, and to adopt the necessary ways and means of returning to their source and origin, like rivers, which, after leaving their source, flow on continuously, in order to precipitate themselves into the sea. You will observe that some rivers move gravely and slowly, and others with greater velocity; but there are rivers and torrents which rush with frightful impetuosity, and which nothing can arrest. All the burdens which might be laid upon them, and the obstructions which might be placed to impede their course, would only serve to redouble their violence. It is thus with souls. Some go on quietly towards perfection, and never reach the sea, or only very late, contented to lose themselves in some stronger and more rapid river, which carries them with itself into the sea. Others, which form the second class, flow on more vigorously and promptly than the first. They even carry with them a number of rivulets; but they are slow and idle in comparison with the last class, which rush onward with so much impetuosity, that they are utterly useless: they are not available for navigation, nor can any merchandise be trusted upon them, except at certain parts and at certain times. These are bold and mad rivers, which dash against the rocks, which terrify by their noise, and which stop at nothing. The second class are more agreeable and more useful; their gravity is pleasing, they are all laden with merchandise, and we sail upon them without fear or peril.Let us look, with divine aid, at these three classes of persons, under the three figures that I have proposed; and we will commence with the first, in order to conclude happily with the last.
Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon, commonly referred to as Madame Guyon, was a wealthy French widow who practiced and promoted a form of Christian mysticism that became known as Quietism. Spiritual Torrents was first published in 1682, and it has remained in print ever since, both in the original French and many translations. Rejuvenated Christian Classics present great works of the Christian faith from across the centuries. While staying faithful to the ideas from the original works, these editions rejuvenate the language and sentences to make these timeless ideas more accessible for modern readers.
Excerpt from The Spiritual Life Rev. Andrew Murray's writings have been much blessed to thousands in this and other lands; when he came to America, in the summer of 1895, earnest prayers were going up from many hearts that his platform utterances might be even more abundantly blessed. God heard and answered, and the heart and lips of His humble servant were wonderfully touched with the divine fire. It was our privilege to listen to the Chicago lec tures, and to gather stenographic reports for publi cation, with a view to passing the spoken word to many who were deprived of the privilege of lis tening to this man of God. We send these printed pages forth, the most of which have been personally revised by Mr. Murray, with a prayer that God may use them to His glory in bringing blessing to many hearts. Excerpt from The Extremely Spiritual Man or Holiness in Action Along the banks of these little brooks stood large elm trees intermingled with box elder, white poplar, and a few scattered ash saplings. Besides the trees there were clusters of heavy brush that gave excellent protection for the many rabbits which sought refuge there. Along the river and for some distance back, the trees were so numerous, that they resembled a small forest. All this added to the beauty of the location. Wm. Constant's land was in time purchased for a town site by a banking firm which later settled there. Soon after this a railroad was built, stretching its long skeleton frame on to ward the setting sun. Excerpt from From the Watch Tower, or Spiritual DiscernmentMeans of a Series of short Views through a window not hitherto nu shuttered, to lead those of my readers who had the necessary aspiration, patience and, above all, strenuous per sistence, to a Watch Tower situated well above the mists and illusions of our ordinary everyday thoughts, whence they would find it possible to get a glimpse of a strange new country, and where those, who have by practice once attained to its clear perception, would be able to con tinne the study by themselves and thus get further insight into that wonderful region of thought which I have called True Occultism the knowledge of the Invisible which is the Real in place of the visible which is only its shadow.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Spiritual Reconstruction Spite of seeming discord. There is not a Spar row, not the tiniest atom of life, outside a divine and beneficent law, which is in its highest essence Love. Consequently your place, your work, your very being are of the utmost importance to life. Even your thought makes a difference to future worlds. The value of a soul is supreme. To the great Master, Jesus, the truth of Being was not a complex science, it was a simple and beautiful realization of love and order. His great work was to reveal the Father; this is the whole meaning of His life. I and the Father are One, He said. In sending these messages we are not in any sense your teachers, we are only re minding you of what you have known throughout the ages; we are revealing you to your inmost Self. God has placed man so high, that he is the channel along which the unmanifest becomes manifest, the Absolute reveals spiritual, creative substance. By apprehending the innermost of yourself, you attain to Christhood, and so per ceive in Jesus the great Ideal for the human race. The witness of the Spirit within yourself is all sufiicient and not dependent on book or teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
