Excerpt from A Selection of Spiritual Songs With Music for the Church and the Choir When the minister wishes to use an unset hymn, he should con fer with the leader before giving it out, that a tune may be selected, and this, as well as the hymn, should be announced to the congregation. In the present volume, while ample provision has thus been made for strictly congregational singing, yet, as its title suggests, spirit ual Sonos for church and Cuom may be used to an equal advantage when a trained choir conducts the service of praise. Excerpt from Hymns and Spiritual Songs for All Hours: Original The hymns having been composed often at long intervals, they may occasionally be open to the charge of sameness; but, while sensible of this, when more than one piece occurred in which there was an affinity of sentiment, he deemed it best to insert the whole, and leave selection to the reader. Besides, the sameness will not seldom be found more apparent than real; and, at all events, be compensated by the variety of the metre. Excerpt from 'Spiritual Songs': For the Sundays and Holidays Throughout the Year The present edition of 'Spiritual Songs' was passing through the press during the Author's last illness, which commenced on the Thursday before Easter, being also the Feast of the Annunciation, and ended in his death on April 9, 1875. One of his last acts in connection with his published poems was revising the proof-sheets of this volume, which he did with the assistance of one of his children. 'Spiritual Songs' is, perhaps, the most popular of his many volumes of religious poetry; and, if it convey to readers in this and another generation the impression of a mind tenderly sensitive to the sunshine of nature and of grace, it may be a satisfaction to them to be assured that the accident and fatal illness which so suddenly arrested his work, and broke up his earthly home, proved to all who watched beside him the brightness of his faith, and the cheerfulness of his love towards man and piety towards God.
