Early Music History is devoted to the study of music from the early Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century and includes manuscript studies, textual criticism, iconography, studies of the relationship between words and music, and the relationship between music and society. Articles in volume 21 include: Aaron's interpretation of Isidore and an illustrated copy of the Toscanello; Musica mundana, Aristotelian natural philosophy and ptolemaic astronomy; The Triodia Sacra as a key source for late-Renaissance music in southern Germany; The debate over song in the Accademia Fiorentina.
This volume comprises forty-eight essays, presented by friends, colleagues and students in honour of Florentino Garcia Martinez. The articles are primarily in the field of the Dead Sea Scrolls, but also cover many other fields of Second Temple Judaism, from late biblical texts and Septuagint up to the pseudepigrapha and early rabbinic writings.
This collection of essays analyzes the relationships that exist between esotericism and music from Antiquity to the 20th century, investigating ways in which magic, astrology, alchemy, divination, and cabbala interact with music. The volume seeks to dissolve artificial barriers between the history of art, music, science, and intellectual history by establishing an interdisciplinary dialogue about music as viewed against a specific cultural background. The synthesis of scientific and historical contexts with respect to music, explored here on a large scale for the first time, opens up a wealth of new approaches to music historical research, music performance, and musical composition. Each chapter presents either a unique example of music functioning within esoteric and scientific traditions or a demonstration of the influence of those traditions upon selected musical works. La materia stessa del film, pellicola trasparente e diafana sulla quale si muovono figure d'ombra, induce a pensare che la vocazione privilegiata del cinema sia nel fantastico, come già riteneva Artaud. I fantasmi, silenziose o sonore apparizioni, ci vengono incontro dallo schermo, in bianco e nero o a colori, da Nosferatu a Shutter Island: materia dei corpi come materia di sogni, incubi e visioni, portatori di maschere, generatori privilegiati di archetipi. Metafisico. Fantastico. Film noir. Horror. Termini usuali, ma inadeguati, per certi film. In realtà qui non siamo tanto di fronte a un'inadeguatezza terminologica, che si tratterebbe di superare inventando un termine più adatto, quanto alla generale insufficienza che l'ottica dei "generi" (un'ottica di comodo) dimostra nei confronti di ogni film che investa universi di senso sufficientemente complessi, tali da mettere in gioco qualcosa che potremmo chiamare memoria filogenetica.
