The purpose of this report is to familiarize engineers and contractors with various establishedmethods of low cost shore protection. It is written for the individual who is knowledgeable in generalcivil engineering design and construction, but not a specialist in coastal engineering or shorelineprotection. This report can be used without other references, but many topics are discussed with onlyminimal detail, so some additional reading may be necessary to gain a better understanding of the text.The Suggested Readingsection at the end of the report lists a full range of readily available books, reports, and publications that are recommended for additional background study
This book is intended for property owners whose land is located on sheltered waters protected from direct action of open ocean waves. As a reader, you may be personally concerned about some aspect of shore protection because your house or cottage is threatened by continued erosion or a sandy beach you once enjoyed as disappeared. Whatever your personal circumstances, it is probably small comfort to know that your plight is shared by many others. In trying to solve your problem, you may have sought the advice of others or observed the means they have used to combat erosion problems. Or, you may have been approached by a local firm trying to sell either construction services or some shore protection device. While such resources may sometimes achieve satisfactory results, you and a majority of others are probably reading this because you have been unable to solve your problems and have suffered substantial capital losses in the process. If such is the case, then this report is for you.
Like ocean beaches, sheltered coastal areas experience land loss from erosion and sea level rise. In response, property owners often install hard structures such as bulkheads as a way to prevent further erosion, but these structures cause changes in the coastal environment that alter landscapes, reduce public access and recreational opportunities, diminish natural habitats, and harm species that depend on these habitats for shelter and food. Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts recommends coastal planning efforts and permitting policies to encourage landowners to use erosion control alternatives that help retain the natural features of coastal shorelines.

This is volume three of a three volume set.The Shore Protection Manual is in three volumes. Volume I describes the physical environment in the coastal zone starting with an introduction of coastal engineering, continuing with discussions of mechanics of wave motion, wave and water level predictions, and finally littoral processes.Volume II translates the interaction of the physical environment and coastal structures into design parameters for use in the solution of coastal engineering problems. It discusses planning, analysis, structural features, and structural design as related to physical factors, and shows an example of a coastal engineering problem which utilizes the technical content of material presented in all three volumes.Volume III contains four appendixes including a glossary of coastal engineering terms, a list of symbols, tables and plates, and a subject index.
Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.
