This series of books are the output of the research project called "Sustainable Development in Asia (SDA)", which was initiated by the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA). They are comprised of one synthesis report, which entitled "Towards a Sustainable Asia: Green Transition and Innovation", and four thematic reports on natural resources, energy, the environment and climate change, and culture from particular perspectives of agriculture. They aim to: 1) investigate common sustainability issues faced by all Asian countries, including population increase, poverty alleviation, pollution control, ecological restoration, as well as regional problems, such as water shortage in West and Central Asia, energy security in Northeast Asia, development model & transformation in East Asia; 2) analyze and summarize of best practices towards sustainable development in Asia; 3) bring forward suggestions and policy options for promoting green transition, system innovation and sustainable development of Asia. With best practice guidelines for a sustainable Asia, this series of reports, for the first time systematically address the common challenges and regional problems in regard to Asia’s natural resources use, pollution reduction and climate protection, sustainable energy development, and innovations for environment-friendly and culture-compatible agriculture. They will provide handy and useful information to researchers, government policy makers and the general public who have concerns about Asia’s sustainable development. AASA is a scientific and technological organization in Asia, established in 2000, comprising of 26 member academies all over Asia. Its vision is to provide a forum for the discussion of all issues relevant to science and technology development and its application on national level within Asia.
This path-breaking book investigates the challenges of realizing the Asian century. Prosperity in Asia does not only mean economic growth; the issues of public health, sanitation, income equality, the social safety net and efficient use of natural resources are also important. It argues for new policy initiatives in social, environmental and natural resource areas of South, Southeast and East Asia. The Asia-Pacific Development Journal is published twice a year by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Its primary objective is to provide a medium for the exchange of knowledge, experience, ideas, information and data on all aspects of economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. The emphasis of the Journal is on the publication of empirically based, policy-oriented articles in the areas of poverty alleviation, emerging social issues and managing globalization.This special issue contains 6 selected papers, developed as spin-off of discussion at the 3rd North-East Asia Development Cooperation Forum. The Forum is one of the initiatives of subregional engagement of ESCAP to bring together researchers and practitioners of development cooperation in the four North-East Asian countries (China, Japan, Republic of Korea and Russian Federation), which are major players in development assistance, to discuss subregional cooperation to strengthen effectiveness of their initiatives. China International Development Research Network (CIDRN), Japan Society for International Development (JASID), Korea Association of International Development and Cooperation (KAIDEC), Russian Association of Experts in International Development Assistance are partnering with ESCAP in this initiative. The papers contained in this issue are submitted by the respective associations. The Forum in 2015, held in Tokyo on 31 October - 1 November 2015, was co-hosted by JASID and JICA Research Institute and had special focus on the development cooperation of North East Asian countries as a key to the means of implementation for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
