Space and time are two inseparable parts of architecture. The human body experiences space through movement in different ways than dancing. A dancer carves the space through dancing. Sensorial experiences have an impact on architectural design. If sequencing and relating experiences with the human body and senses can be related through architecture, how can art and architecture be experienced through space with dancing and time? Time is the tool and opportunity to measure and experience every moment we have, as our body moves through space. Capturing every sequence that we experience in a space is the exact and the honesty of the space, the honesty of human nature. How all the experiences, choreography, and time can help in designing a larger scale of a city but not just a single building? Buildings, streets, sidewalks, spaces between them, and every single element in a city and our everyday life creates new experiences for us, as designers how can we design according to choreography to provide these experiences? Through a series of observations of dance rehearsal, interviews with architects and dancers, and readings of philosophers, such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, John Berger, Sigfried Giedion, and Susan Sontag concerned with the relationship of time to our experiences through space, and specific dance theoreticians, a discussion unfolds to consider the essential relationship between architecture, time, and dance.

Architecture and Choreography: Collaborations in Dance, Space and Time examines the field of archi-choreographic experiments—unique interdisciplinary encounters and performed events generated through collaborations between architects and choreographers. Forty case studies spanning four decades give evidence of the range of motivations for embarking on these creative endeavors and diverse conceptual underpinnings, generative methods, objects of inquiry, and outcomes. Architecture and Choreography builds histories and theories through which to examine these works, the contexts within, and processes through which the works emerged, and the critical questions they raise about ways to work together, sites and citations, ethics and equity, control and agency. Three themes frame pairs of chapters. The first addresses disciplinarity through works that critically reflect upon their discipline’s tools, techniques, and conventions juxtaposed against projects that cite or use other art forms and cultural phenomena as source material. The second interrogates space and the role of spatial dispositifs, institutions, and sites, and their hidden and not-so-hidden conditions, as conceptual drivers and structures to subvert, trouble, unsettle, remember. The third asks who and what dances, finding a spectrum from mobilized architectural bodies to more-than-human cybarcorps. Modes of collaboration and the temporalities and life cycles of projects inform bookending chapters. Architecture and Choreography offers vital lessons not only for architects and choreographers but also for students and practitioners across design and performance fields.

The intent of this thesis is to find an architectural solution for the dance performance theatre that informs the users of dance and allows dance to inform the definition of the architectural space. In this reciprocal dialogue. I hope to expand the vision and interpretation of both architecture and dance.

Spatial concepts as perceived in dance are employed to inform the design of architecture and landscape. The goal of this thesis is to find an architectural solution for the dancers' retreat center that informs the users of dance and allows dance to inform the definition of the spaces in architecture and landscape. Mutual influence and exchange of ideas between the two disciplines occur in this reciprocal dialogue. The project is aspired to accommodate different performance scenarios and to create permeable volumes of spaces that allow fluid movements between architecture and landscape.
Odyssey Works infiltrates the life of one person at a time to create a customtailored, life-altering performance. Central to this book is their 2013 performance for Rick Moody, author of The Ice Storm. His Odyssey lasted four months and included a fake children's book, introducing the themes of his performance, and a cello concert in a Saskatchewan prairie (which Moody almost missed after being stopped at customs with, suspiciously, no idea why he was traveling to Canada). The book includes Moody's interviews with Odyssey Works, an original short story by Amy Hempel, and six proposals for a new theory of making art.
Moving Sites explores site-specific dance practice through a combination of analytical essays and practitioner accounts of their working processes. In offering this joint effort of theory and practice, it aims to provide dance academics, students and practitioners with a series of discussions that shed light both on approaches to making this type of dance practice, and evaluating and reflecting on it. The edited volume combines critical thinking from a range of perspectives including commentary and observation from the fields of dance studies, human geography and spatial theory in order to present interdisciplinary discourse and a range of critical and practice-led lenses through which this type of work can be considered and explored. In so doing, this book addresses the following questions: · How do choreographers make site-specific dance performance? · What occurs when a moving body engages with site, place and environment? · How might we interpret, analyse and evaluate this type of dance practice through a range of theoretical lenses? · How can this type of practice inform wider discussions of embodiment, site, space, place and environment? This innovative and exciting book seeks to move beyond description and discussion of site-specific dance as a spectacle or novelty and considers site-dance as a valid and vital form of contemporary dance practice that explores, reflects, disrupts, contests and develops understandings and practices of inhabiting and engaging with a range of sites and environments. Current neuroscience discloses that all emotional feeling originates as movement. Kinesthesia, our sixth sense, begins with movement of muscle cells and ends as emotion. Depth perception, which depends on movement, is always feeling-laden. To be expressive, art must somehow move our bodies. Studies of expressive dance demonstrate that we unconsciously model observed movements, duplicating in ourselves the feelings that generated the dancer's movements. The art of landscape creates choreography for a walk. But each of the fine arts play a role in landscape design. Here, then, is a new theory of landscape that easily extends to all the fine arts, explaining our enjoyment in landscape, as well as aesthetic enjoyment more generally.

This book contains readings of American, British and European postmodern dances informed by feminist, postcolonialist, queer and poststructuralist theories. It explores the roles dance and space play in constructing subjectivity. By focusing on site-specific dance, the mutual construction of bodies and spaces, body-space interfaces and 'in-between spaces', the dances and dance films are read 'against the grain' to reveal their potential for troubling conventional notions of subjectivity associated with a white, Western, heterosexual able-bodied, male norm.
