Excerpt from Spanish Composition Tms book, which is primarily intended as a companion volume to the author's An Elementary Grammar of the Spanish Language, is designed for the use of students in Spanish who have mastered the elements of grammar and syntax. Its aim is to furnish more advanced exercises than the detached sentences found in grammatical treatises, and thereby to lead the students from such sentences, through connected parallel passages and short stories, to the more difficult task of using Spanish as a means of expression. Excerpt from Spanish Prose Composition As for the general plan of Part I, I acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. V. E. Francois, whose excellent French Prose Compositions suggested to me the idea of getting out a similar book for students of Spanish. The Spanish text of this part of the book is almost wholly original, com posed with a view to illustrating the grammatical points to be reviewed and to supplying interesting material for conversation and exercises in translation from English into Spanish. Excerpt from Spanish Composition Compiled and Edited With Notes and Vocabulary The present book is intended for the use of students who have passed the initial stages in the study of Spanish. After the student. Has had some practice in translating easy English sentences and retranslating into Spanish the material fur nished by his text (in which process the phrases of the original serve as a model), he should be trained in trans lating new material. This exercise develops the power of analysis and the faculty of judgment, and cannot fail to pro duce self-reliance and independence. A good, idiomatic translation is the product of clear and accurate thinking. The material upon which the student is to exercise his ingenuity cannot be a matter of indifference. All the mate rial presented should serve not only a practical, but also a cultural purpose. While the student gradually learns to ex press himself more or less readily in the foreign idiom, he can at the same time, almost unconsciously and without addi tional effort on his part, be led into the very life and spirit of the foreign language and people. This double purpose the author constantly kept in mind during the preparation of the present volume. Consequently, the selections here presented for translation deal exclusively with Spain, Spanish life, cus toms, and institutions. Excerpt from Spoken Spanish: A Conversational Reader and Composition Boys and girls of high-school age love to act, and in memorizing, rehearsing, and presenting a short sketch before their classmates, they acquire a feeling for the spoken language and a mastery of idiom that can be obtained in no other way, except by constant association with those who speak it. Excerpt from A Spanish GrammarTo no slight degree drill work has been made a conscious feature in the preparation of the composition material. It will be seen, particularly in the later exercises of the book, that the sentences of the English part are based on the words and the turns of phrase occurring in the Spanish part pre ceding. On this account the student needs to resort but rarely to the Vocabulary, when translating from English into Spanish.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A New Spanish Grammar: Adapted to Every Class of Learners Again is the author of this grammar called upon to acknowledge his gratitude to the American public, for the distinguished patronage extended to his feeble efforts. The consciousness of having been induced in all his literary labours by no other view than that of being useful to a-country from which he has received the greatest testimonials of esteem and hospitality, is to him a greater reward, than all the advantages usually derived from the most successful productions. With these sentiments, neither approbation, nor censure has ever had any other tendency in his mind, than that of endeavouring, by research and study, to render this, and other works more and more practically useful. In regard to this grammar, he has only to say, that every succeeding edition from the publication of the first, bears ample testimony to what is now advanced. It had always been the intention of the author to offer the public a classic as well as a school book. But owing to a multiplicity of conflicting circumstances, it has unly been accomplished in this fourth edition-how well the public must judge. No rule subject to contrariety of opinion has been left unsupported by one or more quotations of some author, generally acknowledged to be classic. Excerpt from An Elementary Grammar of the Spanish Language No apology need be presented for the publication of a new Spanish grammar or text book. The growing in terest of the public in the only language that can be considered a rival of the English tongue on the American continent requires the production of new and more per feet instruments for the acquisition of that language. Excerpt from Temas Espanoles This little book is designed to furnish material in Spanish composition and conversation to second-year classes. The subjects treated in the twenty-eight les sons are, to some degree, the same as those included in my Spanish Composition, published some years ago, but the texts are sufliciently dissimilar for the two books to be used to advantage in alternating years in the same school. Each of the first twenty lessons is divided into five parts. In the first part, the fundamental principles of grammar are studied systematically, and the grammati. Cal rules are stated, briefly and simply, in Spanish, Opinions may difier as to the advisability of introducing a considerable amount of Spanish grammatical ter minology in the elementary course, but it seems rea sonable that when the grammar is reviewed, students should at least be required to read the rules in Spanish. Whether any further use will be made of this material in the classroom will depend upon the judgment of the teacher.
