Excerpt from A Souvenir of Niagara Falls: Showing Summer and Winter Views of Niagara Falls and Their Surroundings What a visit to Niagara Falls would cost; they had no established price for anything. They endeavored to read their victim, judge from his appearance how much money he was liable to have in his possession, his gullibility, and deal with him accordingly. The writer will never forget his first visit to Niagara Falls in 1866. (he was somewhat younger then and less experienced in the ways of depraved humanity.) Before he got away from them he was thoroughly convinced that he had surely fallen among thieves and robbers, and was very thankful to get away with the same clothes he had when he arrived. To think of carrying away any cash was absurd. However, there have been great changes wrought since that time. In 1885 the State of New York purchased 107 acres of land in the immediate vicinity of the Falls, comprising all of Goat and other islands; also a strip of land on the main shore extending from the new Suspension Bridge below the Falls to Port Day, about two miles above. The appraisers of this property awarded the owners removed all objectionable buildings, and laid out beautiful drives and walks. The Canadian government soon followed the example of the Americans and purchased an area of 154 acres, at an expense of and named it Victoria Park. In 1888 it was opened up to the public. What nature has done for Niagara has been widely supplemented by the actions of two great nations. Thus by the gener osity of the two great commonwealths the public has been given free access to one of the greatest natural curiosities of the world. Every facility has been afforded the tourists to see the sights to the best possible advantage and at the least possible expense. If you wish to walk around there are no restrictions. If you wish to take a carriage the prices are very moderate and regulated by the State. In fact all charges for services rendered the tourists are under restrictions and very moderate. Excerpt from Pan-American Buffalo and Niagara Falls: A Picturesque Souvenir It is said that it would take hours to see the sights at the Paris Exposition. Allowing eight hours a day for sight - seeing it would take somewhat more than three years to take m the whole of this tremendous show. The Pan American Exposition at Buffalo during the season of 1901 will excel the Paris Exposition in four particulars; in the electrical effects, in the horticultural and floral embellishments, in the hydraulic and fountain effects, and in the court settings. But in the matter of exhibits the aim of the superintendents of divisions is directed to securing representative displays in all lines, and to avoid, as much as possible, duplication in the various sections. Each exhibitor is urged to select special things from his line of products in order that the Exposition may place before the world all that is newest in machinery, implements and merchandise in general. The Exposition will be distinctive in its up t-o date character. In the classification of exhibits they have been arranged 1n some fifteen or more groups. These are: electricity and electrical appliances, fine arts, graphic arts, liberal arts, ethnology, agriculture, horticulture, live stock, forestry, fish eries, mines, machinery, manufactures, transportation, and special exhibits from the Hawaiian Islands, Porto Rico and the Philippine Islands. Important sub-divisions of this classification are, educa tion, sanitation and hygiene, agricultural machinery, ordnance, dairying, and others. All the principal countries of Central and South America and the West India Islands have expressed their intention to make adequate displays of their many interesting pro ducts, and the principal States of the Union will be on hand with large exhibits showing their natural resources and manufactured products of all kinds. One of the leading purposes of the Exposition is to promote closer relations among all the republics of the Western Hemisphere in order that trade and commerce may be given a new impetus by reason ofa better knowledge of the markets of all the countries. Pan-American Buffalo and Niagara Falls - A Picturesque Souvenir is a reproduction of Charles Cutter's beautiful booklet originally sold at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo, NY between May 1 and November 1. This publication contains images from three different versions of the same title. As the Exposition progressed, Cutter acquired new images and replaced those of lesser value in the next printing. We have incorporated all common and unique images from these three editions. Included in this work is a tribute to US President William McKinley, who was assassinated at the Exposition on September 6, 1901, and passed away on September 14, 1901. Like all Media Hatchery public domain publications, the text has been reset and formatted with Adobe InDesign, the images meticulously restored and enhanced with Adobe Photoshop, and the pages printed on the highest quality paper to ensure a truly enjoyable reading experience.
