"Since the earliest days of football, the Gamecocks have helped make the sport a favorite in the Palmetto State. In the early 1900s, the team joined many other schools banning college football because of the injuries and deaths nationwide. Martha Williams Brice donated $2.75 million from her estate to help bring about an aggressive and overdue expansion. After executing one dazzling play after another and surviving three down-to-the-wire games in ACC play, the Gamecocks wont their first and only conference championship in 1969. Author David Caraviello offers a behind-the-scenes look at Gamecock football history." --
Daily Devotions for Die-Hard Fans: South Carolina Gamecocks combines the great passion of the Gamecock fan with the grand passion of the fan of Christ in one set of devotions. The result is a book that is fun while it provides a time of reflection about God and your faith. The Gamecock football team once made a decision that killed a bowl game. The greatest fast-pitch softball player in USC history didn't even play the game until she arrived in Columbia. USC's stunning upset of Georgia in 2019 turned out to be the fulfillment of a piece of Hilinski family prophecy. The USC women just had too much to overcome to beat Miss. State for the 2017 national title. Funny thing about that. Clean air, clean water, and pretty girls - that's what lured Alex Hawkins to Columbia. These stories and more are recounted here. Also appearing are Steve Spurrier, A'ja Wilson, George Rogers, Marcus Lattimore, and many others. Their stories - along with legendary games, improbable victories, and historical events - are told with a twist: They are all tied to God's story. Have fun! Have faith! Go Cocks! Go God!
Most people thought it would take a miracle to bring the Gamecocks' women's basketball team to the nation's top teams, but Dawn Staley has always beaten the odds. She stood at the podium on May 10, 2008, and promised to bring national prominence to South Carolina, and with a lot of hard work, Staley's vision for the Gamecocks' women's basketball team came true over the next nine years, culminating in the 2017 national championship. Her willingness to keep striving and to deliver on her promise was met with early resistance, but it paid off with several winning seasons, terrific recruits, and finally, the only prize Staley had not obtained in a lifetime of championship basketball. David Cloninger takes you on the team's journey to the national title.
After more than one hundred years of craving a champion, the University of South Carolina finally has one. The 2010 Gamecock baseball team won six consecutive games over eight summer nights to take the College World Series and lay claim to the school's first major national championship. From dancing around in a dark locker room to singing "Silent Night"? on the team bus after every victory in Omaha, these Gamecocks were as fun-loving as they were talented. And they did it all in the name of one special boy, seven-year-old Bayler Teal. Bayler passed away before he could see his beloved Gamecocks triumph, but the team's victory is a tribute to their number one fan. Join the Post and Courier's Travis Haney as he recounts this incredible team's historic season.
Chicago native Steve Wadiak rushed for 2,878 yards in four seasons as running back for the University of South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks football team, 1948-1951. Wadiak died in a car crash in 1952 before fulfilling his dream of playing professional football.
With one of the most amazing football turnarounds in NCAA history, from 0-21 in 1998-99 to a 2001 Outback Bowl victory over Ohio State and six subsequent championships since, the South Carolina Gamecocks rang in the new century with a bang. For 45 years, author Tom Price was in Columbia, South Carolina recording the stories that have made the Gamecocks one of America's greatest collegiate sports teams.
