Excerpt from Songs of Praise and Practical Life The world is full of books, many of them worthless, which have been written purely for speculation. But in writing this little book I hope that a money consideration has had noth ing to do with it. My object has been to ben efit mankind and for the comfort of all Chris tians, that they might become more interested in the spiritual life, and be less wrapped up in the things of the world. Excerpt from Sacred Poetry: Consisting of Psalms and Hymns, Adapted to Christian Devotion It is humbly a/zjzrehended, that a grate/ill and afl'eetionate address to the exalted Saviour of mankind, or a hymn in honour of the eternal S/zirit, cannot be disagreeable to the mind of God. To stigmatize such an act of devotion with the name ofidolatry, 28 (to say the least) an abuse of language. It cannot be justly charged with derogatingfrom the glory due to the one God and Father of all, because he is the ultimate object ofthe honour which is given to his Son and to his S/tirit.
