Excerpt from Columbia's Jubilee in Light and Song As the child at school signs his name under A fair sample of my handwriting, expecting that practice, training and kind criticism from a faithful teacher will improve his hand, so would the author venture these few pages, asking a friendly public to be his kind and faithful helper in a work not wholly a fiction. Excerpt from Songs of the Seasons: And Other Poems The present volume exhibits specimens of my moody but delight ful companion. She is ever to me a source of inefi'able pleasure. She is too independent to court the favors of the great, and shrinks from seeking the applause of the vulgar. Her joys are in the sanctuary of the domestic circle. My task is simply to give to the world the promptings of her inspiration. Should they be received with the smiles of favor, she may be encouraged to future exertion; but should the tribunal of the public, before which she is about to appear, doom her in justice to eternal oblivion, let her go unlamented. Whatever the decision may be, there is no danger of my pining away under a feeling of withering neglect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Creation a Song of the Ages; Songs of the Christ and Other Poems Starting to study anew the Biblical account of Creation, for exegetical and pulpit purposes alone, a poem sprang up at once into mind. Seeking a sermon, there was found a song. The opening stanzas were written immediately; the remainder was completed after an interval, made necessary by the varied duties of a pastor's life, and the need of more extended research in special directions. An inspiration at first, the conception has been wrought out with painstaking care and thorough re-examination of authorities bearing upon scientific questions involved. Geologists are substantially agreed in finding evidence of distinct geologic ages, forming an ascending scale from the lowest and first formative conditions up to the highest and most complete. And it is found, upon comparison, that these progressive steps in creative work correspond in a surprising way with the Six Days of the Mosaic account. It is observed, too, that the order in which these ages have progressed is precisely that which is pictured in the Days of Moses. For example, Geology points to a period of time wherein the earth was subject to the action of original, formative, and contending elements, before the beginning of vegetable or animal life. So does the Bible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Songs of the Rising Nation: And Other Poems Ah! Young, or middle-aged, or old - what then Love is the same bright ignis-fatuus ever That plays the mischief with the hearts of men, And women too, dark-bair'd or grey. There never Can come a time when that delusive light Shall lose its charm to lure - its power to blight. Old land of mine! Say, shall I sing thy wrongs? Alas! What need? Doth not thy misery Breathe in the murmurs of a thousand songs A ceaseless flood of mournful melody While nobler muses tell the grievous tale, Mine can but weep the woes of Innisfail! Religion - but my pen's not smooth enough It could not treat the subject as it ought. 'tis an old crabbed pen, rusty and rough, And stops, and trips at every pretty thought, And slurs this word, and Sputters that - and so, Religion must not be my subject. No!
