This is volume one of the long awaited Bishop_BischoffResearch book series on the history of the Bishop family that came to America in 1747 from Oberhausen Germany. They arrived in Pennsylvania, and migrated from Philadelphia through Maryland, into southwestern Virginia. Hans Johannes Bischoff, 18 years old when he arrived in America, settled in what is now Floyd County Virginia, and remained there until his death approximately 1810. This book series documents what is known of his life, and the lives of his many many descendants.
The militia was organized in 1777 after the county was established in the previous year. All men between the ages of 18 and 50 were required to register, attend muster and perform others with their captain of the militia. Only those who were infirm or not fit were allowed not to attend and this information is often listed on the muster rolls.

These three Rhea brothers and Margaret are thought by researchers to be grandchildren of Matthew Campbell Rhea of Scotland and Ireland. And, so, the author’s story begins with him.
James Mattinearly moved from Pennsylvania to Augusta County, Virginia before 1778 during the American Revolution, and shortened his surname to "Early." He was neither related to nor connected with the Early family that settled along the eastern shore of Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Vir- ginia, Tennessee, Florida, New York, Illinois and elsewhere.
