Sharon Buydens first served on the Board of Directors as Secretary and newsletter editor for the El Paso Solar Energy Association (www.espea.org) starting in 1989 (under her previous name). After learning about passive solar home design, and teaching workshops, attending events, promoting solar on Earth Day committees, she designed and built a passive solar straw bale house in Nebraska. Upon returning to El Paso in 1999 she became EPSEA's Project Manager for three bi-national and EPA grants to install solar water distillers in border colonias, and was first female EPSEA President in 2001. Today Sharon writes books and teaches others about the many practical aspects of solar energy.

Quickly toss together the ingredients for Cashew Curry, place it in the solar cooker, point the cooker to the midday sun, and head to work. You'll come home to a ready-to-eat hot meal. Solar cooking is a simple and easy way to prepare a meal without constantly stirring and watching pots or heating up the kitchen, but simply using the sun's heat. Easy recipes can be made at home or in camp with little preparation, and the book even includes instructions for making your own solar box or folding panel cooker. “ Cheese Strata and Solar Baked Custard, which require delicate cooking, are excellent, and fish cooks up nice and moist. Stuffed vegetables also turn out well, and they don't need to be parboiled before they are stuffed and baked in a solar cooker. Pasta in baked dishes doesn't need to be boiled first. Foods don't need to be marinated; the solar cooker will marinate as it cooks the food - all in one step.
Solar cookers and driers capture the sun’s rays to heat and dry food. Although not well known, these technologies provide better results than conventional cooking and drying methods in terms of economy, ecology, food quality and ease of use. Liberally and colourfully illustrated, this practical guide presents step-by-step methods for building and using a box cooker, a solar panel cooker, a direct solar drier and an indirect solar drier. Simple to make and use independently, the technologies provide an economical way to meet the food processing needs of diverse populations. Topics covered in this inspirational text include types of cookers/driers, construction and use, and a handy table of costs. Finally the guide has a useful chapter providing further reading and contacts.
An exhaustive manual-essay introducing you to the world of solar cookers that highlights the potential of these practical tools with which you can cook your dishes outdoors with solar energy alone. You will learn the history, development and refinement of solar cookers, but also the theory of apparent motion of the Sun, as well of solar radiation and its conversion into heat. This book is accompanied by an extensive theoretical and practical section that illustrates the working principles of solar cookers: complete with the methods to build them with recycled materials, illustrative examples and advice on recipes.
This definitive textbook deals with all aspects of solar box cookers. While it is a suitable reference for the experienced builder, it is widely used for technology transfer in Third World locations & is comprehensible by young students, housewives & those without a technical education. The emphasis is on inexpensive, locally available materials & handcraft methods. It covers principles & guidelines for designing your own solar box oven in the materials of your choice. Designing, building & using solar box devices for a variety of non-cooking purposes are discussed. Four different sets of plans for simple cardboard solar box cookers are included along with recipes & cooking strategies. It is an indispensable guide for those interested in serious solar cooking.
